well I need to buy a good rotating assembly, my 454 block checked out to be ok, no cracks, needs to be bored 30 over, but the stock crank is toast. I thought it would be easier to just get the whole assembly instead of getting a crank, then pistons seperate, also I dont think I would want to use the old rod either, (it spun a rod bearing and piston was split in half) , just me. The question is, which assemblies are better, scat or eagle? I have been looking in my summit magazine and they sell both, this is just going to be a stock stroke( the 427 crank is pricey as hell) so basically a stock replacement, but better, any thoughts? thanks,

well I have two 396 's one has a good crank, one doesnt, so I was thinking about putting the 396 crank i have in the 454, but then I decided I would rather save it, its the complete motor, it was what was in the boat originally. I was looking at site that had eagle cranks, rotating assemblies, they sell a 427 crank and rods, pistons, etc.. and wow it costs alot more than a standard 454 crank (stroke). I decided to just go with the stock stroke, I kinda like the shorter stroke myself, but then again the boat has never had a 454 in it, i might like it better.. i was kinda trying to put it back as close to original as I could, but I guess now that it has a painted floor:angry: stupid me!! I geuss its not really original anymore! i wish I had a good fiber glass shop in the area but we dont, I would have to drive about 4-5hrs away, and thats what iM GOING TO DO WHEN THE SHIT PAINT COMES UP! OR TRY IT MYSELF FIRST, FLOW COAT, ANYWAY I THOUGHT MY DAD WOULD THINK IT WAS COOL (427) BUT THE STOCK 454 MIGHT BE BETTER ANYWAY? OH WELL

If you want to stick with a 427, stick with a 427.

I had some stuff laying around - - 7115 crank (396/427), 361959 block (454), 1965 Impala SS (327/PG). With a stock set of non-ported 290 oval-ports upped to 2.19s, slightly over-mild Xtreme Energy roller cam and Edelbrock dual-quads. I put a 4L80E trans behind it. With 3.31 gears and 26.5" tires, first and second are almost useless. If you stand on it, you had better be serious. I really DIDN'T expect to run this hard.

So, a 427 is nothing to sneer at. Even the small 396 is no slouch at all. Yes, there is no replacement for displacement, but there's absolutely nothing weak about a well-built 427.

Look into the 4.250 stroke kit the is no substitute for cubic inches in a N/A engine with pump gas.

If you are buying after market crank your money is probably better spent on a 4.250 and longer rods, but that is a completely different budget. Just remember, most 427 stuff is closed chamber.

Don't know your exact definition of pump gas but my 11.0-1 C/C deal with .020 head gaskets runs fine on terribles 91 octane and maybe 25% 93 octane

ya i was looking at after market kits (eagle/scat) i would like to get a kit that is balanced, because I dont really have good machine shops around here, thats why I was saying the 454 kit was cheaper it seems the 427 kits from eagle cost more than a 454 kit, im not really stuck on the 427 , but I have alot of 396 heads, and rods so thats also where my idea was coming from, but then getting a full kit might be better for me right now because i really have no machine shop to take my stuff to, unless i drive out of town, which i might. Thanks for the help and advice.. I know the 396 and 427s build good power! the boat had a 396 in it, and I thought it was pretty fast, probly nothing compared to some of the peoples boats on here, but to me it was fast enough! If you build them right, they scream! I have a friend that has a 59 impala with a 409 in it, that car screams, and thats a huge car!, so Im not going racing, just want a good reliable motor, either 454 or 427, I have a good 454 block , and i thought i had two good 396 cranks, but it turns out i only have one good 396 crank, and i want to save it, so I was looking at scat rotating kits in summit, they cost $992.94 sca-92250 its a 454 kit, crank , rods, pistons, bearings, but its not balanced, but thats a pretty good price for everything I think.
