Ok - any one build a personal size 8'-12 race boat - I was up on the ell river this weekend and thought , man it would be cool to build a mini racer for the smaller streams - I pondered taking a older semi vee hull ( fishing boats ) throwing a deck on one , roll cage , and a lake lice set up ? What should one think about when setting up a boat ? including safty , bottom design, intake set up , and most importantly boat exiting ? clue me in , I have no clue ! I would like to entertain my mind with the thougts of disrubting families on a nice peaceful river as i blaze by in the shallows :) :D

The 17 can run in a river thats as wide as the boat and in fact ive seen them run through channels with water thats narrower than the boat~! If you can't get thru it in a 17 Sport you have no business running it, trust me here!

Yeap, got me hooked too :D The 17 is incredible it handles like a slot car and goes exactly where you point it. It doesnt slide at all which is pretty important in those channels lol

You just haven't lived till you've run some tight back channels in a 17...

Lucky if you are going to save for an Eagle make sure its a Steptec bottom boat and personally I would not want anything but the 240 SJ in one. Yes a V8 is cool and sounds good, smoother power etc but when you get stuck etc that Mercury motor is alot easier to push!

Mine is almost finished, have a look at my 17 nears completion thread I just posted yesterday

Cheers

How much water does there have to be for those boats to float? How do you get going again when you get stuck in 2 inches of water,or is that the trick never stop?

haha yea stopping is lets just say usually a very bad idea!

Typically getting stuck involves alot of pushing and curse words. Tools carried can be as simple as a good solid log to aluminum push bars, boat fenders (boats roll on these really well)come alongs and chainsaw powered winches

The 17 can probably run 3" at higher speeds but it is a 20 degree hull and that tends to give you less time to think about what line you're chosing etc

Its a catch 22 I guess: you wish the boat was slower to give you more time to think but the only way to do that is to go flatter and that means a boat which is much more slippery in the corners which makes tight quarter manuvering almost impossible. Luckily when you jerk the wheel in a 17 it turns NOW :D

Definitely a huge adrenaline rush there is no doubt about it

The 17 can probably get going again in ~12" or so of water depending on the current and how many stones you have wedged in the intake lol You learn all sorts of tricks from the expereinced guys on how to do this type of thing.

This is a video of a local who I've boated with a fair bit. He runs an 8 degree boat and you can see how its alot less positive in the way it turns.

I think the boys in this video also had some creative ways to get going again lol

I've watched this video a few times, but every time I see it I end up watching it all the way through, just shaking my head. That video is bad ass!!!! You guys are nuts!!!!!!!!!! I can see that hobby getting very expensive very fast, with the price of impellers and such. I'm guessing you run the stainless impellers, correct?

Post up some more videos!!! I love to watch those boats go through those tiny channels and jump beaver dams and stuff!!!:)devil

How often do you guys go through pumps?
How good are you at driving and avoiding gravel? lol :D

Seriously its not uncommon to have to rebuild those little Mercury Sportjet pumps once a season. They are surprisingly durable for what we do to them! Most guys will replace the aluminum wear ring with a pressed in SS liner the first time they redo the pump and that lasts about as long as 4 aluminum ones. The impellers themselves can be built up and welded etc to regain clearances. The impellers are not "shrouded" like what most of you guys are used to so its easy to work on blade tips etc

Cheers

Post up some pics of those impellers, you've got be confused here.

And aluminum wear rings???:)eh:) Hell, I run a bronze one and stock berks. are S.S. Why would you ever run an aluminum W.R. when you do stuff like that to them?

Crazy Canadians!!!:D

Sportjet pumps are not mixed flow like a Berk or Dom etc they are more like a Hamilton style volume pump. The impeller is not "shrouded" meaning it has no smooth outer "ring" that engages a wear ring surface like on a Berkeley. The ends of the blades are exposed to the housing.

Here are a few pics which should help explain, one of a Merc Impeller and one of two "wear ring" housings

Cool!!!

That's a crazy looking impeller!!!! That's like a piece of art work!:D Kinda looks like it would spit the rocks out of it a little better and be less likely to get one lodged in there.

Thanks.:D
