So the great state of Louisiana and Gov. Bobby Jindal have made eliminating the state income tax a part of this year's agenda. Great news. Hurrah for us.

HOWEVER, I am completely against the way they are doing it and cannot support it. And no I'm not a liberal. They want to make it "revenue neutral" by increasing the sales tax. Sounds great, I'm all for consumption taxes eliminating income taxes. Unfortunately, Louisiana is already in the top 3 states with the highest sales taxes. Combined state and local taxes in a city near me is 10%. Yes, that's a 10% consumption tax we're already paying on top of every other tax we have (federal and state income and property). The local sheriff's department succeeded in guilting enough voters that they needed more money to "protect" us to increase our local sales taxes another 0.25%. They did it of course with the line "it's only 25 cents for every $100". Their main revenue comes from property taxes but they just had to have more. Anyway, in order to remain "revenue neutral" they will have to increase state sales tax by 3 or 4%.

Hurray! I would love to pay almost 15% for a new car. $30,000 car? Sorry, your total comes to almost $35,000. And you still have federal taxes that are more of a problem than any state income tax. High price item sales would plummet. Someone needs a new washing machine? Screw that, get in the car honey, we're driving to Texas to do it.

Now, I will admit the state portion of the sales tax isn't the problem. Currently 4%. Going up to the equivalent of say Florida (who doesn't have a state income tax) at 6% would be fine with me. The f&*king problem here in Louisiana are the local governments that want even more than what the state gets. In addition to the property taxes they get too. So, until they rein in the greedy local governments, I say no to 15% sales tax in order to eliminate a meager income tax. It's parish and city taxes that add up to the current 10% in Monroe, LA. 4% state, 6% combined for parish and city.

This bullshit is just BULLSHIT! Quit moving the taxes and cut some f&*king spending. Government services should not be costing me in excess of half my f&*king income.

I agree they are out of hand. But you would still come out ahead the way they are planning it as you would pay zero state(sales) tax on money you save. So for every dollar that would have had a state income tax on it that you save you gain.

We lived in Washington for a while where they have no state income tax but a moderate sales tax and higher property tax. I actually liked it better than a state income tax. Think of all the people skirting the income tax by working under the table, doing business illegally, or working illegally. Most will now pay their fair share through sales taxes.

I pay 8% (?) plus income tax and property tax. I'd trade you!!

consumption tax is not poor friendly either. If you have a progressive income tax that the liberals live for, then its more than possible to not only not pay dime one, but actually receive money if your income/dependent qualifies in some cases. But there is no escapeing sales tax. I have always thought consumption tax was the most fair form of taxation. Never heard a car store clerk ask you your income so he could calcualte your sales tax. Income is not part of the calculation.
BUT, when they simply jack the sales tax thru the roof, FOR EVERYBODY, then the sales of goods goes thru the floor, and big ticket items like washer/dryers, and refers geems to take place outside the area and that kills the local stores.

Its exactly what you would expect from Calif. Politicians are dumb as rocks.

Are food stamp/ebt purchases taxed? They get a portion of "cash" on those cards too.

At least its a way of getting a little from the takers.

We have sales tax here in Washington. I LOVE craigslist. Keeps my money local where my neighbor needs it more than wallstreet does, and keeps tax money out of the thiefs hands.

Don't get me wrong. I don't give a rats ass how poor you are, you spend one dime on none food, I say tax your ass, and tax it exactly the same as you, me, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Its the same freek'n, buying the same freekn things. The tax should be exactly the same, ACROSS THE BOARD! But the liberal whiney bitches hate that in place of a crippling STEEPLY progressive income tax. Ask R&D, 1986, shue and their fearless marxist leader CVX.

This country did just fine for 150years collecting tax exactly the way it was originally charter in the constitution. Import and sales tax, with the states getting by far the the majority of the sales tax money generated in their state.

Not a soul wants to pay taxes. Every person does, however, want the stuff taxes pay for though some differ on how they should be collected. State income taxes are despised by some and a few states are considering ditching them, but there's evidence as to how good and bad they really are.
