Current setup:
355 SBC
10:1 2-bolt
Camel hump heads 2.02's
Pertronix and msd2 coil
RV cam
Weiand style TR with dual 450's
Logs (making through transom headers the winter)

This winter i plan to tear into it as i'm getting some blow by and want to see if more power will help it set back on the rideplate.
In its current form it turns a A/B to 5100-5300 RPM.

My main question for opinions is if i should throw a crank and rods in it and make a 383 with aluminum heads and a new cam.
Or if i should yank it and put a fairly stock big block in it.
It seems to work well as a package with the weight of the smallblock and its kinda easy on the wallet.
Opinions and or reccomendations on cams and heads is really appreciated.
I was looking at the xtreme jetboat cam from comp.

'RV cam' doesn't really mean anything. How about some specs ?

When you let us know, there may be a real good chance a head change and cam change could make you a boat load more power. If you want to go further and go to a 383, then that can be made to make even more power.

1st thing first........cam specs.

The boat is a 16' schiada v bottom.
The cam specs are unknown. The prvious owner said a RV cam and after hearing it wake up with the tunnelram I'd say its a very mild cam. It definately doesnt sound stock but its not real lopey.
I know it doesnt really help but thats all the info I have.

Just finished a 383 Stroker used a Howard hydraulic FT was very repectable I'll find the number and the rest of the build specs if your interested to compare Tom

If you want to keep it a small block, scrap the 383 idea and go with the 400. Run a set of atleast a 5.7 rod but if you can afford it, grab a set of 6.0 rods (better on the cylinder walls.) Also, Crower has some real nice small block rollers cams (somehting in the 620 -630 lift range and 250-260 @ 50 duration on a 110 -112) If you are going to run headers, tighten it up to 106. Small block 400s love a tight LBCs.
You can run whatever compression you want as 400's don't care too much.
A combo similar to this went mid 10's in my C4 Corvette and I drove it to the track. Was well in the 9's on a small 150 shot (driving it 200 miles each way to the track). Compression was 9.2:1
I would get rid of the 450's and get into some 650 Dps or if you can find them, a set of 660s Cntr squirters.
You can make power with the Camel Humps if your head guy knows what he's doing. If not, grab a set of Brodix or AFR's.
If you add up what it costs to build a 383, you'll find that it many cases it is cheaper to build the 400. The bigger bore of the 400 also helps unshrouding the valves which is a bid geal when trying to make power out of a small block.
In a small block....cubes is KING!!

Back in the day, Sig Erson and some other cam manufacturers used to label their cams in the catalogue as RV, mild street/offroad, street, street race, 3/4 race, and then race.
I guess the lables were to help those who were foreign to spec numbers.

What, are you a puppy. I was thinking more like the Winfield cams and flat head days;)

I would get rid of the 450's and get into some 650 Dps or if you can find them, a set of 660s Cntr squirters.

LOL...generations before my time:D
I do remember looking through an old Sig Erson catalogue that my dad had laying around and I always thought "how easy it would be to pick out a cam because it says right here what each cam was for". I never understood why my dad always said the wrong cam could ruin an otherwise perfect combo. Who would pick out the wrong cam when it's labled for you and all the hard wortk is already done??:D

Some good advice here, and entertaining as usual with you guys.

my theory is that if you are bothering to pull it out- hog it out.

A few more cubes in a SBC go a long way toward making it tractable and well behaved.

A decent set of Brodix or AFR heads (Im using ported track ones) and you can make a mill that makes 500/500 over a nice wiiide "boat friendly" curve and idles like a kitten at 800 RPM. (although not as critical in a jet as a outdrive)

Im using a custom Engle Hydraulic roller.
