Howdy everyone. Totally new to the jet boat scene and have a few questions. I have the opportunity to buy a boat. It's a '79 Silverado with a naturally aspirated bb454 and a Berkeley jet drive. I have searched for a few days and can't find ANYTHING about these boats. The price sounds right (even if I need to put some work into it) just know nothing about them. Good hauls? Reliablah blah blah. Been around go fast things my whole life, would really enjoy getting into a boat. Any info would be appreciated!

welcome to the wonderful world of jet boats IWGF. You've come to the right place, lots of knowledgeable, helpful peeps around here that will be along shortly to assist you as they can. I'll start with a couple of the basic questions while we wait for the experts to chime in with their expertisezzzz. Is the Silverado the model or manuf. of the hull? Have you tried researching the HID# in the boat manufacturer's data base?
Are you familiar with the process of checking a hull for delamination of the coring? Is this a v-bottom style hull. flat or tunnel? Got any pics. Good pics help tremendously to aid in differentiating hulls, characteristics etc. In an effort to save start up costs etc. many new/smaller boat manuf. splashed (copied) good performing hulls of other larger successful boat builders so it may very well be a good performing design without a well known brand name. good luck and welcome aboard.

Thanks for your response! I do not know the procedure for checking the HID# or for checking the haul. If it was checking for cancer on the rear quarters of a Nova II this would be a different story, boats are a new breed to me. It is a V shaped haul, and I'm not sure if Silverado is the manufacturer of the haul or the model. I got a few pictures from the gentleman trying to sell it.

I've seen a few over the years...... Check to see if it's a full length stringer or if the stringers stop at the end of the engine well. Probably full length if I had to guess. If the price is good, it has a BBC and a Berkeley, so it looks to be a good foundation.

trailer is wourth a grand motor running is wourth 2500 all day long

Yeah buddy...I get how the jet and such work, and get that Berkeley is a solid way to put the power down...Just don't want to Bring Out Another Thousand in this girl. Have some money to build another toy...Just not sure what I'm getting into. Thank you for the info though

The stringers appear to be full length, meaning they run all the way forward and don't stop back by the engine. Pump appears to be a stock nozzle C pump, but its hard to tell. If it runs good, I say that is a pretty damn good price..... Just my .02....... It's worth more in parts than it is as a turn key deal.... But any running jet with a BBC and Berk pump on a tandem trailer for that price is a deal....

Plan on it, dude lives in a different state. Probably go down in the next few months when passes are clear and drag her back home. Can't wait for the spring!

may I suggest you learn to do the tap test on the stringers, transom core etc. before you go buy it? if you don't wanna "bust out another thousand" you will be hugely disappointed to find out how much time and money you will spend to fix that and it will be thousands.(2-4k) it's very common for these older boats to have serious delam. issues just from age alone not to mention water intrusion from bolt holes, interior mounting lag bolts/screws etc. . does the boat have carpet in it? how where has it been stored? has it had water sitting in the bilge for extended periods of time? Has the glass turned white from moisture intrusion into the laminations from sitting water? Just a couple things to consider when looking at boats for sale cheap. Are you familiar with the old saying "there's no more expensive boat than a "free" boat." haha Why do you suppose that is? Seems counter intuitive doesn't it?

Silverado boats

Silverado boats were built for a short period of time during the late 70's and early 80's in Anaheim Ca. By a guy named Greg Covin. He had a 20 day crusier, a 19 long deck which was very similar to a 19 Carrera Eclipse and an 18 bubble deck. Good entry level boat and on a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate it a 7. Never kown for it s all out performance but knowing where the hulls came from you have the potential if done right will perform just fine.

Hey man, appreciate your insight. Yes the boat has carpet in it, it had been stored in a shop for years in California, empty bilge, and from what I can tell the glass is in great shape. Haven't seen it up close bit I plan to soon. The gentleman that owns it has only taken it out twice and has stored it ever since. The tap test, I assume, just means giving the old girl a few raps in certain possible "weak" areas? Listening for a hollow sound or? Again thank you for your tips.

That's correct.... You are looking for the sound of rotten or delaminating in the stringers and the transom. Also take a good look at the intake and obvious signs of damage.
