I am setting up my fuel system and need some advise.

Firstly I would like a mechanical pump but I don't have a place for one. I could use a belt driven one but i don't know anything about them and they seem expensive. (if anyone wants to trade for a Weaver 3stage pump I am interested)

I am planning on using a relay for the fuel pump, a fuel pump, a fuel pressure regulator with a return, and a pressure gauge near the carb.

The engine is a 509 Chevy that makes 575hp at around 6000. It will not be revved more than the low 5000's. The carb is a Holley 750 VS. I am looking for something that I don't have to look at or worry about for years. The engine is in a 20' aluminum whitewater boat.

My questions are:

Is there a way to run a mechanical pump on a gen6 Chevy?

What pump, relay and pressure regulator should I use?

What other options are there?

Now I have a fuel pressure regulator question. It seems to me that all fuel pumps need to run fuel though them to keep cool so I need either a bypass regulator or a fuel log and a non return style mounted after the carb.

I was looking at the aeromotive regulators and their fuel system diagrams show the regulator on the return side of the fuel log. This seems to mean that the pressure is regulated in the fuel before the regulator and not after. Are there regulators that are built to deadhead or are all of the nonreturn style regulators built to be on the return side? I don't think they can be both.

Ran lots of combinations, especially lower HP deals without returns either at the pump or regulator. A standard Holley 12-803 regulator would work fine for your combo without all the plumbing necessary for returns. Since you can't run a manual pump, any of the smaller, internally bypassed electric pumps would work fine as well.

It seems that I got part of this backwards and the non return style regulators are designed to control the pressure after the regulator and not before although some do show the regulator after a fuel log. I assume that deadheading won't kill a decent pump so I will use the pump Andrew recommended and a dead head non return regulator.

It's certainly not an inexpensive option at over $500, but it is an option none the less...

Mercruiser raw water pump with a fuel pump boss...


Oh, wait... you said white water boat... probably a jet and no need for a raw water pump at all. Oh well, carry on
