Sssssh can I quiet my boat? Engine cover pics

FIXED

I had a fun day today. Broke my boat on the water (nothing bad, but had to trailer it). While my wife and I were talking about our boat, and some day upgrading I asked her what she didn't like about this boat, or more specifically what she'd like to see changed on our current 74 sidewinder. She said first and foremost, it's too loud. Personally I disagree :D, so I kicked her in the teeth and told her buy her own damn boat.

And on that boat I told her to build an enclosure for the motor, and if she didn't like that she should look into buying some mufflers.

Then I told her to hurry the hell up and get with the dinner makin.

Thanks again,

Nick

Fast Forward... The engine cover that you guys recommended I make is finished. Was quite a bit of work, but I think it turned out pretty good. I'm not sold on the colors of vinyl my wife picked out, but if you've seen my boat the color isn't really important to me. All I have left to do is install it, bolt it down and install the speakers, blower, etc. Check it out here

Building an engine cover will help some with the mechanical noise, I did one years ago and coated the wood with resin and applied insulation on the inside to help with noise and heat. actually I got rid of those jump seats and the rearward facing ones and made a bench seat in front of the engine cover.

as far as the exhaust rumble, take her for a ride in a
boat with open headers and she will appreciate that nice

Pushing , doesnt appear you have "room" for inline silencers so your best alternative is a stainless 4" tip to replace your existing Bells that would allow our small mufflers They will really knock down the noise call if we can help Tom

If you do build a engine cover make sure it is well ventilated with a marine grade blower underneath the cover. Your next option would be to change out the transom/exhaust tips with some that have mufflers in them or at least can add mufflers to.

I've seen it where the air scoop sticks out of the cover, is that the best bet? Otherwise do you just vent the cover at the front to let air into the carb? I'll be sure to put a blower on it, already got one here.

Thanks

You can have a carb scoop sticking out the cover, or you can fab up a scoop in the cover itself. From the boats that I have seen there is one vent facing forward and one vent facing rearward.

FWIW, we have made exhaust crossovers for aluminum fishing boats, they work excellent for noise and don't effect the performance even a little, on some applications they help performance.

I am going to try and muster some pics.

I'd verify that the noise she doesn't like is actually exhaust noise. If it isn't an engine cover would probably do the trick. I still have logs and when I was running with my engine cover off I was amazed at how much sucking noise the flame arrester made.

well all have to compromise to some degree, but apparently she runs the whole show, not just part of it with you;)

the engine cover will knock a ton of noise down, more than you think,i would do that first before i played with mufflers, good luck.travis:)hand

Your boat looks like a cobrajet I used to have, and mine had a cover over the motor. It had a ring around the bottom that came up off the floor about 8 inches or so and then the rest of the cover would tilt forward and then when closed it would latch on the transum. I think I see the one half of the old latches from a cover on the back of your transum;)

Pushing gvws, i put a total cover on mine, can't even hear it at idle..she'd probably be happy with the swim platform too if you do cover it and make the rear seat a bench seat. Also, my rear swim step handles the rest of the noise..i'd do that before mufflers in my opinion.

Let's try this... I'm gonna re name the thread, Yo Fellas, help me build a engine cover... so I have a place to keep my wife when I let her out of her cage at home.
