Need a new starter and I have a BBC with 10.5:1 compression. I purchased a high torq starter from Summit but it shorted out internally during the second crank. Also, I wasn't impressed with the starter I received. It was a Proform mini hi-torq which was put together with metric hardware. I thought jet boaters didn't need metric wrenches??? Anyway, is the stock starter good enough? I didn't have any starting problems with stock, just developed a dead spot and I'm tired of hitting it with a hammer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I ran a stocker for years with 12.1 compression. Had extra $$ when i freshened it up last year and bought a high torque from jegs and have had good luck with it.

i got a hi-torque one.. I like it so far.. I like the fact of how small it is for taking it out and putting back in.. However i have no real data on stock vs hi-torque, performance wise...

Starter

I have a BBC with 12:1..last week I replaced the starter with a stock one from Kragen..life time warranty...$49.00..cranks like crazy. So far so good..it is a replacement for the original 454 starter for motors in the 70's..usually trucks from what I understand..

Gear reduction! If I have to touch a starter on any of my vehs, I spend a little extra to go with perm-magnet mini-starters. They stay away from exhaust or whatever else is down there / up there (depending on veh and mounting location) and use about half of the amperage to spin the motor.

I've had the little gear reduction on the boat going on 4-1/2 yrs now without any issues. I bought the brand new stuff, starter and marine alternator, from A1truck in Fresno from his ebay auctions. If you're interested, here's a link to his current auctions-

They were excellent to deal with also, sent the starter out on a rush before I sent the check.

The trick to getting the OEM type starters to work is make sure and get the high torque version, very common mistake to get the single strap starter which was made for smaller displacement engines.
The high torques have two copper straps coming out of the stator and going to the back smaller pole of the solenoid, this unit is double wound and puts out roughly 75% more torque.
I have a high torque gear reduction on a 11.0:1 468 Chev....Works great, I have a high torque OEM type on a 10.0:1 454 Chev. also, no complaints.

I do believe you can get away with a smaller battery on the gear reduction starters.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to repond!!! I ended up at Autozone and picked up a high torque gear reduction starter (OEM type) with lifetime guarantee. It's half the size as the original starter. had no clue this was an option from a local parts house. I believe it depends a lot on whoe's behind the counter though. Yorba Linda Autozone has come through for me on a number of things. Thanks again!!

The problem could have been that it was a Proform product. I've never used that brand but a buddy of mine bought a lot of their stuff because it was cheap. He wasn't very happy with it. He used their roller rockers and they didn't last three trips down the strip before three of their rocker arms blew apart at the needle bearings. This was on a mildly hot rodded small block. He was happy with the distributor but who knows how much better a stock HEI would have done. The water pump didn't last very long either. He still has the starter in but he's only running 9.5:1 compression. He's waiting for that to go as well.
