Looking for some advice picking a starter. I'm modifying a bell housing for a top mount starter location. I picked up a top mount starter from one of the board members. I didn't look closely at the picture and it turned out to be a Prestolite 3 bolt starter used by Harmin Marine, and Chris Craft. My original intention was to use a 2 bolt Delco starter. My question is does anyone have experience with both starters, pro's, con's? I've found that the Prestolite is a 1/3 more costly and harder to find than the Delco, but is it a better unit? Since this is something I'm building, I don't want to build the bell housing for one style and end up regretting my choice. Motor is a blown BBC. Appreciate any help. Thanks Greg

PLS remember, all top mount starters are CCW :)...i bought mine from DB Electrical in Johnston City, TN...it is a 2 bolt starter, which makes for better alignment to the flexplate...just my .02 cents :)

I had a severe duty tilton top mount on my jet( I also have a big box of
different mounting plates for the same type of starter, and a bunch of rev
rotation stuff, only had one 3 bolt presto mount block tho and it went with boat- BUT there are quite a few others that might work- pm me, and
I'll send you a pick of what's left! and no I don't have any more regular
bottom mount chevy blocks, either:p

Junk??

IMHO, most, if not all, of the aftermarket starters are junk and chew up more ring gears than all the stock starters combined... I run a 3 bolt, (horizonal) starter bolted to a powerglide adapter, pushing 13:1 w/ locked out 39* timing, injected BBC, and it never fails...... These are "Joe down the street rebuilds", stock GM type Hi torque starters... I know of many, many "high torque" aftermarket ring gear sheering, "mini" starters.... Too bad they aren't heavy enough to be used for anchors.........

I got my hi torque Summit starter and SFI flex plate in 2000. Used them on 2 different 12.5:1 BBC, locked out timing since 03 at 36* and starter and ring gear still working. I guess there is good and bad in all products.

I appreciate the input. Maybe I misssed a little on my question. Since I'm modifying a bell housing to become a top mount and can choose either 2 bolt or 3 bolt, is one "better" than the other? Once built that's what I'm stuck with. The Prestolite looks more industrial, but I can't seem to find a torque rating to compare between (2 bolt)Delco and (3 bolt)Prestolite. Delco seems more common, but both are used in boats. I would like to make the decision based on knowledge and not eany, meany, miney, mow. :)sphss
P.S. Moneypit , thanks for the blower hub, got it last week.
