Finally made it to the lake yesterday...boat seemed to run well other than a pretty disturbing noise. The noise was intermittent.....would come and go every now and then at all different r's. Other than changing my intake manifold and new impy ....the only other thing I had to change was my starter...I seem to buy one of those a year.lol When the starter is not engaged...it appears there is less than .010 between it and the flex plate. I am not 100 percent sure this starter shim will fix my noise issue.....but its all I can think of to try. My problem is I cant figure out how to install the shim.:)sphss I am pretty sure I know where it needs to go....but cant get the front of the starter off....apparently because of the pinion gear on the starter. Can some one enlighten me? Do I need to take this to a starter/alternator shop? TIA

First off, more and better pics would be helpful.

From the looks of what you posted, there should be 1 bolt going through the mounting plate into the starter(looks like you have it out) and two more coming from the starter side into the mounting plate. Removing the gear would not likely help as it is smaller than the bearing it runs in.

BTW, once the bolts are out, the mounting plate may just be stuck on the either the bearing or the end of the starter housing.

First off, more and better pics would be helpful.

From the looks of what you posted, there should be 1 bolt going through the mounting plate into the starter(looks like you have it out) and two more coming from the starter side into the mounting plate. Removing the gear would not likely help as it is smaller than the bearing it runs in.

BTW, once the bolts are out, the mounting plate may just be stuck on the either the bearing or the end of the starter housing.
My bad....just needed a bigger hammer.lol It moved quite easy for about the 1st 1/4"...thought there was a migic c clip or something keepin it on. Rex or any mods. out there ...please feel free to delete this thread.:)sphss

Man if I am meant to put the smaller round washer in side the starter.....they gave me the wrong f'n size washer.:)violent I assume thats where it goes...or dont I need that 1??

If you are trying to move the static position of the drive gear away from the flexplate, that isn't going to do it. Instead, if both pieces in the plastic bag are the same thickness, the round washer would go between the drive gear bearing and the mounting plate(remove drive assy from plate) and the other piece between mount plate and starter motor housing. That comination will move the entire strarter and drive gear forward relative to both the starter mount plate and flexplate.

Thanks for the help...I just adjusted it with a grinder and a file.:)sphss It looked like it was just kissin the tips of the chisled edges on the ring gear. Sounded nice.lol I will edit in a pic. After a little closer inspection my 2 year old flywheel has some run out....nothing like quality control.

Well, I guess that's one way to go......

As long as you have the one starter apart, could you pull the drive assembly out of the mounting plate and see if the spacer they supplied fits between the drive and mount? The bearing at that end is larger diameter than the one that is visible. Also curious as to whether the other item in the bag in 1st pic is the same thickness as the round spacer.

i just installed the same style starter,it needs a minimum .060 clearance between the flywheel and the starter gear.I had to put 2 shims in mine to back it far enough away from the flywheel.

Did you just use the bigger shim....like I said...it that smaller round one is meant to go somewhere....I cant figure it out. I assume it is supose to go where I have it sitting in the one pic. In that pic you can pretty easily see its a hair to big. I am really gettin sick of pullin my motor this spring.lol

The larger spacer fits perfect between the unit and the mount. The smaller round one looks to be the same thickness.
Edit; thanks guys...just got off the phone with jegs tech support...he says just use the big one. Said something about the other shim is for an older style bell housing...

Yes i used 2 big shims that go between the mounting block and the starter motor,not sure where the small one goes,nothing in the instructions about it and i could not see where it goes.might be for a different set up?Mine is working well like it is.

For your own sake, remove the drive gear from the mount, install a shim inside there as well as the one between starter body and mount. I happen to have a disassembled Tilton version of that same type starter here next to me. I can tell you his advice definitely looks wrong.

Well then I have the wrong size shim...as far as the small round one. I thought that made sense too until I called the jegs guy today. I have pm'd twin turbo...we have the exact same model Chinese hitachi rip off jegs special. I have bought the same part number every year for 3 years....they dont like 2 get wet.:)sphss The one I bought last year looks nothing like(internally) the one I posted pics of. It came with a thinner shim from the factory...I took it off and put the thicker one on. I am hoping I am golden.lol:)grn

Wow....sorry to edit my post...this thing has me a wee bit shook...I have to retract my statement....these starters are the same...well pretty much ther are not identical. I am gonna try what the jegs guy said....wouldnt surprise me if it was wrong. LOL

Here's a couple pics to explain what I am trying to tell you. First pic is of the mounting plate and drive gear assembly put together. Similar to what you showed in an earlier pic.
The only thing holding these 2 items together is the snug fit of the bearing in the mounting plate. The second pic shows them separated. The round shim you have needs to be dropped into the hole in the mounting plate followed by reinstallation of the drive gear assembly. By doing this you move the drive gear away from the flywheel flexplate by the thickness of the shim. Since you have moved the drive assembly relative to the mounting plate, the motor/solenoid housing needs to move the same direction by the same amount, hence the need for the larger, irregularly shaped shim.

Thanks....was thinking you were telling me it needed to go in the starter before I dropped that other piece in there...and she didnt fit. It fits nicely in there.:)sphss Live and learn...gotta love jegs tech line.lol
