Newbie Jet question. When firing up the engine while in dry dock, in hooking it up to a hose do I still have to "regulate" how much water the hose is putting out so not to over pressurize the cooling system and flood the engine?

Btw: 455 olds w/logs.

Do yourself a huge favor and install a water pressure gauge on the block.. That way no matter where your at you know the pressure..

My hose only puts out about 5psi on my gauge.. And ive got awesome water pressure.. i think youll be ok.

But with that 455, if you have the turkey trey under the intake do yourself a huge favor and toss it. Go with some cometic or mr gasket gaskets.. I run the mr gaskets at a solid 14 psi at WOT no problems yet.

I regulat my water pressure from the water neck at the manifold controlled with a ball valve.. One line off the water neck is always a constant dump through tansom, the other line has the ball valve to control water pressure which is also connected to an overboard dump. Wi that valve closed i can see anywhere from 30-40 psi with it fully open 6-10 psi.. open it about 3/4 and im where i wanna be..

Looks like you have OT headers, He's got Logs. If it is plumbed like mine, through the logs first, it will not build much if any pressure in the motor.

If you are going to run it in the driveway, I would disconnect the pump from the motor, hook the hose up, and run it.

You can try to regulate the temp with a valve if you want but from the experience I had with mine you will have to shut the water almost completely off to build any heat. You are then risking air pockets that are much higher in temp than what the gauge is.

Try doing a search, This has been covered here many times. After a little research I'm sure you will find an answer that you agree with.

Good call didnt catch he had logs..

Even with logs my pressure still went sky high.. regulate it somehow..

also, with logs, make absolutely certain that the bow of the boat is elevated, just like the boat would sit in the water. if you turn on city water with the bow low down toward the ground, you can easily get water running back up those logs and into exhaust valves - not good. some guys don't even turn the water on until it's running to make sure it won't do that.
if i have one side of the boat lower than the other, i'll jack up the low side so it's level, side to side, as well as having the bow up just a bit. if boat attitude and side to side angle are ok, i'll turn the water on before starting - never had a problem.

Don't know if I have a turkey tray under the intake, just got the boat this summer. Just going through it before I put it in the water. Looks like the engine has new heads on it. Had to put in a new starter so I could do a comp check before I fire it up. I will disconect the jet drive before I fire it. I still have to go through the carb as it's been sitting a while. Thanks for all the advice guys!
