I have a 2003 Velocity 260/496 Merc Mag./Bravo X Drive. Motor has power steering, but the helm has what I think it way too much play, see video below. Can it be adjusted or how do I eliminate the play. It's a tilt wheel unit. I know nothing about these so your help is appreciated. The total slop is in the helm, nowhere else.

Thank you
Gary

From your video it looks like the play is in the rack behind the dash. Seems to be an inherent problem with stock style steering, full hydraulic is the sure way to maximize steering and minimize play.

steering play

The problem may be the flex joint inside the steering head. If that is the problem the head will have to be replaced. Hydraulic steering is good but on the pricey side and a little more work to get installed but worth the effort.

I had the same problem on my last two boats. Replace the helm, tilt mechanism and the cable. It will tighten it right up and should cost less than $200 and two hours of your time.

Could this be a tiller arm/gimbal shaft issue? I had lots of play in my Bravo 1 & needed to rebuild gimbal/tiller arm. Different boat since I did that!

I honestly know nothing about your X drive. Just sounded familiar to the issues with my Bravo 1. Good luck!

Steering slop fixed

Thanks for the advise, but decided to rip out the cable steering completely and go full Hydraulic, no more slop.
