I think there is alot of curiosity (maybe mainly mine) what is the costs everyone have run across for machine work to your block and heads etc. I am curious to see if costs from different areas and shops are really different in price. And hopefully someone looking at getting work done will have a better idea of what the costs should be and be prepaired.

I will start with what I have paid and am looking at paying. I live in the Central Valley (Fresno,Modesto).

My Iron Heads
Tank, Mag, 3 angle valve job $200

My 454 block
2-bolt block conversion
$475 to purchase a nice 2-bolt block (actaully ready to assemble)
$465 to line bore for 4-bolt conversion
$235 for billet caps
$100 ARP Main Studs
$129 ARP Head Studs

Dale Ferriera (Hondo Boats) is doing the assembly of my motor for $850

Walt Ott is doing the 4 bolt conversion and line bore.

Here's some thoughts.
Starting with the heads, unless your guides are new, they should be checked. Doing a valve job with worn out guides is a waste of time and $$. There's a lot more to having a decent set of heads than a 3 angle valve job. Are the seat depths going to be checked and/or equalized? What about facing the valves? (even new valves should be faced) How about checking spring pressures and setting installed heights? Do they need surfacing? Then there's the final assembly.

On the engine assembly, does this include any handwork, like deburring sharp edges? How about checking clearances with something more accurate than plastigauge? Rings gapped? Check crank end play? Cam thrust? Does the cam get degreed? Is the oil pump clearance checked? How about valve train geometry and pushrod length, will they be checked and corrected during assembly? Will the oil pump pickup clearance be checked? How about the distributor gear alignment with the cam? Will the new fasteners (if any) be cycled before a final torque?
These are a few of the questions I might be asking for my well earned money to be spent to have someone "assemble" my engine. I'm certainly not directing this at Dale Ferriera (who I don't know) or anyone else specifically...just a general observation. I certainly can't assemble an engine for $850.00

It also depends on how well you know your machinist. I could walk into my buddies shop, drop off my parts and he would do all that work off the clock for me for a couple cases of beer and the price of the parts.:D It's good to know people in your area, and to trade favors whenever possible.

The only reason I haven't done it is because I don't have the money for the parts.:(

But I have a Sunnen Ck10/line hone machine for sale if anyone is looking to get rich in the engine building business.

I would agree that $850 would be on the real reasonable side for all of the above... (not directed at anyone, I do not know Dale either, just a general statement).

x2 I do chassis work for a guy and he does the machine work. Both happy.
