Sorry, this is more of a rant than anything but I figured some of you guys could relate.

Son in law brought his toyota truck over to replace the front main seal due to an oil leak.

Everything was a breeze till it came to removing the balancer bolt.

  • Rattle gun....... nope.
  • Breaker bar...... nope
  • Hooked the end of the 2' long breaker bar to the frame and bumped the starter....Nope
  • Ran jumpers cables over from my dually to the toyota and bumped the starter......Nope
Now f'n bolt was getting personal!!!

  • Welded up some steel into a tool that would extend from the frame to the bolts that hole the v pulley to the balancer to lock the motor solid. Breaker bar to my 210 lbs son and 180 lbs son-in-law.....Nope.
  • Same set up with another 2' of cheater pipe to the breaker bar......Nope
  • Drilled and tapped the holes in the balancer to accept some bigboy 3/8' grade 8 bolts to make sure the tool stayed in place since we ripped the threads out of the balancer on the previous attempt and tried it again.......Nope
  • Put a 2' peice of pipe on the end of the breaker bar extending to my 4 ton floor jack. Lifted the truck off the ground but let it set while we applied some heat as well as cold to hit while hitting it with a hammer to shock it..........Nope
Now it was gonna be me or that damn bolt...........


Thru the sweat, pounding headache telling me my blood pressure was trying to go to melt down I said......"Son, swing the dually around and lets hook a chain hoist from the dually to the breaker bar"


It was at this point my wife, daughter, son and son-inlaw decided it was time for pops to go set down........"the motors got 260K miles on it, we'll put a new one in the truck and fix it right".

Hahaha, I forgot got that one. Yep, we tried that too. I was afraid that if we put any more pressure using that method we would bust the housing too so that's why we welded the tool up to lock it to the frame.

Stubborn bolt

As long as that bolt is not cross threaded or rolled a thread on the way out and you can get another bolt,(junk yard or new). Cut the head of the bolt off, it will unload the threads. Put a socket or something else around the part sticking out so your balancer puller will push on the crank snout. Then the part left should unscrew rather easily depending on the amout of lock tight on it. Hope this helps.

If you are still determined- take a torch and heat up the bolt,,,,cherry red. Let it cool just until it's not glowing and then hit it with the impact. The heat expands the metal and breaks the bond between the bolt and the crank threads.

bolt from hell

I have gone through the ringer with that same bolt but the way i have undone many of those is get a good 1/2 in drive braker bar or i use a matco ratchet . That way there isnt as much play between the handle and the driver side frame . Put the ratchet on to of the frame with the correct socket and go tap the starter and wala its magic . You may wana have some one hold the ratchet on the balancer just to make shure it dont fall off

It's not the threads that are the problem, it's all the surface contact area under the integral washer that you're trying to move. If the bolt and washer were two different peices, it would be a a different story, but you're trying to spin that washer.
You need to break that contact between the wahser and the balancer. You need two things...Kroil, and a long steel bar. What you need to do is very sharply and with a lot of force, hit that bolt on the side of the hex and try to move it sideways. Spray it with Kroil, and hit it. Hard. Not sure if you can get something in there to do that, but if you can, tht'll break it loose. The bar needs to be stout enough to deliver the energy; 3/4" round or square steel, something like that. After you smack it hard a few times, try the impact gun again. That should do it. This is an old trick we used to use on motorcycle case screws when they were phillps head screws. You could fight them all day with a screwdriver and ruin the philips, or just take a punch, hit the head of the screw sideways a little, and they'd come right out.

I didn't realize the bolt and washer were intergral parts. Cutting the head off will get you no where with out removing the washer also and that would be a real pain in the a$$. Like steele said breaking the friction of that washer will help and if you can get to a direct strike from the front(no radiator or ac condenser in the way) will help reduce that friction.

Ya gotta hit it from the side...at least that's been my experience. ;)

I'm with you on that that is why my reply said and if you can strike it from the front. I'm also with beer, I also believe in throwing a little heat on something but a fine thread crank bolt it would be my last resort.

Best advise here, making dissimilar metals break up with each other is the goal. Each one will move at a different rate with heat, patience is the key.

I can remember a time like that working on a rig and then to only find out it had reverse threads...Ugh!

Thanks for the tips guys. If the motor didnt have over 260K on it already, we would probably take another shot at it but in the long run, the motor is going to have to come out anyhow so we'll defer to that.

Heat it up and hit it with parifin wax. all over the bolt head and washer. Hot enough for the wax to melt on contact.

tighten it a hair to break it loose.

What dissimilar metals?
What I meant was between the bolt, washer and the mating surface they will each react to the heat differently.
I deal with this almost daily on the fishing boat and a combination of heat and shock seems to work the best for me.
