Took apart the carb to find this. What is it and why? Carb is a holley 750 double pump marine version. Sat since around August of last year. Is nowadays gas that crappy?

Oh and this carb was on my boat when I still had the fiberglass tanks that were falling apart. Don't know if it is related to this issue or not.

Thats pretty fine stuff. The corrosion on the accel pump diaphram happens. The crap in the bowls, eh. I would have gone right out the jets is you hadn't taken it apart. Its actually pretty decent.


Next time you let it sit that long, shoot some Marvel down the vent tubes.

What is it though. And it's holleys marine version carb with the "j" style vent tubes. Hard to get anything down them.

Its possible its the stuff from your glass tanks that made it passed the filter/seperator. Like I said, its pretty fine. Alot of filters don't filter stuff that small. The color looks like rust. Possibly from the filter can on the seperator if its one of those that looks like a oil filter canister.
Yes it is one of the canister fuel water seperators. Mounted on the transom. Both tanks feed into it and one line to the mech fuel pump. And yes stuff definitely made it passed the filter. Flushed the fuel lines and pump during this process of elimination and got some crud out of them.

When those filters get too full, they pass water and stuff. I made a trip up to Parker with a friend a few weeks ago to service his boat with a similar problem.


Based on my own previous experience with bad fiberglass tanks many years ago, I can pretty well confirm that the tan colored stuff is from that. Until I replaced my tanks, I had the same stuff.

Cool thanks Barry. I replaced the glass tanks with some aluminum ones I got off of Craigslist. Never bothered to change the filter. By then the crud was already building up inside the carb I guess. I just was opening the carb up earlier thinking what the heck is all this. Makes sense now.

You can pull a bowl screw out to drain fuel. Carefully take off the float level lock screw without turning the nut. You can get marvel in that way.

Accel pump diaphram is the lowest point of the bowl. it will catch anything in there.

Don't forget the obvious, hello? He lives in the desert! It might be dirt!
You can add gas and Mystery oil through the "sight" plugs on the side of the bowls, or as mentioned the upper bowl screws after draining from the lower one. (AND, don't worry about overfilling, it won't hurt a thing)....
I usually add the 50/50 mixture before parking the boat. The fuel evaporates, the oil doesn't, and keeps things pretty well lubricated while sitting..... Once "new" gas is added the oil will create a little initial start up smoke, but it goes away very quickly....
As far as "dirt" in the desert, it's more than likely "river silt" which is very, very fine grained. Very fine, like the finest "dust" Texas has ever seen...... I see more carbs here at the river that are "varnished" to the max after the gas evaporates. To the degree than vacuum secondaries are "welded shut" with the crap... The varnish is in the tanks, and new gas only serves to dissolve it right back into the new gas to once again be introduced into the carb(s)..... I've seen far too many fiberglass tanks be blamed for "colored" gas, when in reality it is a layer of varnish laying in the bottom of the tanks....

it's called... shit. 30 years ago, i was rebuilding the carb at the start of every season. same reason. for the last 20 years, i drain the carbs and empty the fuel system after the last run/race of the year. marvel get's sprayed in the spark plug holes. i also drain the bowls before towing any distance. it's also why i've run k&n's on each boat for the past 20 years, which a lot of people laugh at. but if i pull 'em and look down the carbs, they're always clean. no bug legs in the bleeds :). i also carry spare accel pp diaphrams and neoprene flapper checks (mine don't have ball checks) everywhere i go.

in other words, it's not some "new" phenomena that only happens with todays fuel. you could find an old carb that was left sitting full of fuel 20 years ago. after a couple decades, after the fuel evapped away, it would look way worse than yours.

Thanks everyone. That was definately the problem I was having. She runs good idles good. All the things she is supposed to do. She's back. Thanks again.

I do the same thing, the last night at the river i flip off the fuel pump and idle floating over the trailer, when i hear the engine speed start to pickup i shut it down. I was told by an engine builder that what most people dont realize is that the fuel in the bowls will make it's way into the cylinders while towing and ends up washing the oil off the cylinder walls.

Not counting that your boat trailer rides like shit compared to your car or truck. The bouncing on the trailer for hours and hours, over time can not only tweek your float's little tang for the needle, but is hell on the needle assmblies too.

No, I am saying that was left behind when the gas evporated.

What can happen in an empty zinc Holley is white rust. Hard crusty shit that won't disolve with things like spray carb cleaner, acetone, etc.
It is caused by water in the E10 pump, or even moisture that gets in bowls from condensation. It doesn't take much to get started, and its like any other rust, it never sleeps.

If the goldish dichromate on the carb is compromised, its a potential victum. Alum bowls and metering blocks are a better bet. Its a zinc problem.
