This was posted on another forum. Could be quite dangerous for boaters with enclosed engine comparments:

As the tittle states: anyone using pump fuel and braided style line (this includes ALL braided lines EXCEPT speed flex and ultra flex 650) need to be aware, that depending on where you live these lines can and will become degraded from using pump gas !

Background:
I have installed pro-lite 350 for fuel trans etc. and have just noticed a scent of fuel. Upon further inspection it was directly from the line itself NOT the fittings. Some areas of the hose also felt spongy, this line has only been on the car 1 mo. with fuel !
Today I called earl's /holley and spoke w/Kevin Cochran who designed the flex series lines and is there engineer for over 25 +years. He told me that he was aware of the problem and that the only solution is to use a teflon core line (barrier style). The core he states is the SAME on ALL the braided options except the 2 that have a teflon core. Both earl's and aeroquip use the same mfg. (Parker) to make the core which is a rubber nitrile base. He went on to state that there are over 23 blends currently of gasoline and some may or may not effect these cores.

How the events will unfold:
First sign of a problem: is the scent of fuel through the line
Second: when the line becomes spongy
Third: it will turn to cottage cheese......and at that point who knows what additional disaster this could bring !!!!

THERE is a disclaimer (posted on the site) that he is quick to recite regarding any questionable fuel additives. I mentioned I have never had an issue before , then he asked "were you using pump gas "?, the answer was NO. He went on at that point to say that if you are using race fuel , alcohol, and or synthetic oils, trans/motor that there is not a problem.

He was familiar w/the parker earl's supplier in my area and they will replace all my fuel line w/the super flex tomorrow, at no charge...(I cracked for the ultra-650, no dice list is 22. per foot!! and the fittings cost even more than the standard ends)

For all of you using braided line, w/the exception of the 2 listed above, you may want to get a closer look/smell at those fuel lines.

Interestingly enough, we had a very serious problem with a fuel line on a race car that had only had racing gas in it for it's entire one year life. It developed multiple leaks. I was not around to cut it apart when it was removed from the car, seems like that puts a hole in the theory that racing gas isn't a problem.

yup, the teflon is the way to go.

But non of it's USCG approved anyway .....

With that said I have crimp and reusable hose ends for the smooth bore teflon hose. And that hose is not 22 bucks per foot. More like under 6.00 for -6. ;)

I thought the problem with pump gas was pretty well known, the is also said to be a problem with certain race fuels on the high end on the octaine scale such as VP116, and for sure with VP-DRT fuel, I have had the same line in for 2 yrs now (and keep a pretty close eye on them) and no problems so far with Sunoco 110. If this wasn't a problem 30 yrs ago, and seems to be relatively recent development, that it's fuel related.

I thought the problem with pump gas was pretty well known, the is also said to be a problem with certain race fuels on the high end on the octaine scale such as VP116, and for sure with VP-DRT fuel, I have had the same line in for 2 yrs now (and keep a pretty close eye on them) and no problems so far with Sunoco 110. If this wasn't a problem 30 yrs ago, and seems to be relatively recent development, that it's fuel related.
I didn't want you to have to put on your quad-folcals in order to see it. :)hand

Problem now is with all the unleaded blends they are mixing for each region in the states. I do alot of cams for resto'd muscle cars and apparently 2500 miles a year an about 700 days sitting in the garage the fuel lines are decayed.
This came up on a conference call I had last week then this gentleman posted this on another forum. I am a mfg rep. for Precision Performance and our hose meet and exceed SAE 30R7 certification. Our permeation is 21% whereas the other cometitors in the market exceed 65%. We use a CPE core and double braided stainless outer that allows you to use the non crimping fittings so readliy available in our market. We also will have a black nylon braided line by the end of the year that has just gotten SAE 30R7 rating and we are currently working on a SAE 30R9 rating which is less then 10% permeation.

and my CPE braided hose comes from Precision.

Teflon is still the way to go. It will catch on in time. But for every 1' of teflon hose I sell I move 100' of the CPE.

What's the bend radius for teflon hose compared to the rubber? Why has it always seemed that teflon hose was a smaller dia. compared to comparable rubber hose?
