Hardin Marine to start selling stage-1 and stage-2 kits:

One of the highlights of the Miami International Boat Show has to be the new complete turbocharging kits for Mercury Racing HP525EFI engines from Hardin Marine.

Scott Price, one of the principals of Hardin Marine, said the kits, which are offered in both 775-hp Stage I and 850-hp Stage II packages, were by far the hottest product offering in his booth. With a starting price of $11,995—including the exhaust—Price has high expectations for the turbocharged application.

Hardin Marine's new HTX2 turbocharging kit of the HP525EFI engine looked awfully impressive at the Miami show.

Now you post up this over priced loser? WTF. I guess when you don't possess the grey matter to change a spark plug you need to buy this overpriced crap.

Seems there are plenty of people with more green matter than grey matter. The margin built into marine engines (marine anything really) is significant, I wonder how much of it is smaller companies just scraping by with small market share and how much of it is there to grossly gauge the pockets of those who can and will afford it?

There is someone out there for every product.

On another note, it's nice to see another commercially produced turbo package on the market. I wonder what turbo and turbine housing they are using? Interesting intercooler arrangement. Styling cues seem to mimic the Merc turbo packages, the air cleaners anyway.

Guessing Stage 1 & 2 are 7 & 10psi, or somewhere around there. I'd like to see another angle and get an idea what they did for waste gates.

I would guess Garret 60-1 turbos like most of them and internal wastegates.

The "starting price" seems similar to Whipple (complete / installed). It would be nice if it stayed that way so that there was a legit supercharged option as well as turbocharged option for the aftermaket.

Didn't know they had a water cooled turbine housing option. Or I did, once, and since have forgot. Just how it goes sometimes:wink2:

Well shoot, now that I think about it a little more, even if you did a Pro-Charger Kit and some high flow exhaust manifolds/jacketed headers... same price point... if not more.

Exactly. Even the Raylar kit is around there by the time one is finished - and that's not near the HP. So, as aftermarket "kits" go, it SEEMs well-priced.

So for a half a zillion dollars you have 775 HP, and there is still a 525 under all that. Not exactly the rock of giibraltar of the motor world. I have no doubts why its limited to that power level. Kind of like buying a Whipple for a 8.1, Why? You can blow anything. Doesn't mean you should, or that it can make the power to justify the cost.
For less money, one could add a pre-historic diesel blower that draws as much HP as it makes. There's also that option.

Very true. But for the non-motor head people out there that already have a HP525 in their boats and want to add performance, it's a good looking package.

For guys like you and me, I assume we'd be more apt to design an engine package from top to bottom. Well, check that, if I personally had a boat with a HP525 already in it and I could just bolt on a solution??? Ummm... I may consider it. Depending on money in the bank and grey matter space and time to create a better package for the same dough on my own.

Just like a credit card, it's easy and it's now. Wait and save or whip it out and get what I want right now?

I have just never understood the idea behind "adding on" to a Merc. I look at the Merc packages, and even thought the cost of them is insane, they are proven. If you just have to have more power, take it out and start over.

99% of the Mercs that are modified are the result of sticker shock at the cost of the upgrade to the next level Merc package at the time of the purchase. But like every boat owner, in time the power isn't enough, so they start piling money into the Merc. Not the most intelligent of ideas.

A friend bought a 25 Daytona with a 8.1 HO when they first came out. In one year he was crying like a little girl that he needed more power. I convinced him to just sell the boat and buy a different one. Smartest thing he ever did.

You're absolutely right. If you don't understand it . . . . it's the wrong thing to do. I'm not gonna do it. We know YOU'RE not gonna do it. But others may want to do it. Just threw it out there for the masses.

Can't argue the ultimate sense in everything you just said.

But again, the average Joe sees things from a different perspective.

From a business/sales standpoint, there is a market for this kind of stuff.

Is it going to end up the ultimate, best, most reliable, most efficient package??? Absolutely not.

However it is an easy solution, with a reputable name brand. Better business sense than mechanical. Ultimately a "product", not a process.

ProCharger has a good spectrum of results for their packages and I hope this purchase leaves you feeling like it was the right decision for your application.
