New to the site so hello all. Anyone running with turbo charging? I'm in the process of installing two M&W turbochargers on my 1974 RallySport 16 FT v-haul Berkly jet drive. Motor 454 mild cam but will be changing out to hydraulic roller this fall. My exhaust setup id the Hardin aluminum commonly referred to as a log manifold. The twin turbo set up is manufactured by M&W and is made specifically for this style exhaust system so the entire turbo setup is jacketed for cooling. They were made round he mid 70's but have been in storage for almost 25 years so in excellent condition. Going trough all the gaskets and seal's now. I have worked with the FI-tech fuel injection systems and they make a very good product. There 600HP power adder system is what I'll be putting on the motor. Basically a throttle body but has timing advance based on boost pressure and a wide band O2 sensor will manage fuel ratio. Looking to get right around 250 horse 10 pond of boost on top of the 300 horse from motor. Like I said new to site so looking to start some conversations this project thanks.

I would pressure test all of the water jacketed parts. To start.

Yes will do. I have talked to FI-tech about O2 install. My setup would put the air inlet's right In the middle of the engine cover so Ill be making an 8" riser to place them above the cover when its shut. Spacer will be made of stainless but will not be jacketed cooled do you see any problem with this?. As you my know the log style exhaust is jacketed then that will flow into the s shaped riser as its jacketed then pass the stainless spacer into the jacketed turbine housing then into the jacketed exhaust dump. FI-tech said the O2senor could be placed almost as close to the turbine outlet as needed was thinking about 5 to 6 inches. They did say there should be at least 18" from the O2 sensor to the end of the exhaust tip or the O2 senor could pick up oxygen readings. what about cams? as for a turbo cam lift isn't so important as duration, is that correct? My question is can I or could I use a good hydraulic roller cam or should I look into roller turbo cams? thanks for our time, hopefully a few more people will jump in thanks.

#1,, what components are in your 454? You kind of sent up a red flag when you said "300hp".

I worked at Gale Banks in the late 70's, and 10 lbs of boost with rajay turbos on the 8.8-1 454 crate engines was rated at 650 hp in his sales brochures, however, those were forged pistons, the heavier 7/16" bolt rods, forged crank and 990 rectangular port heads, with an intercooler.

Cam technology has improved in the past 35 or so years, but you are correct in that you don't necessarily need a roller cam with your engine, just make sure to run an oil with the increased levels of zinc and phosphorus (usually a racing oil or using an additive with your other engine oil of choice)

Ya did some research on the M&W / rajay units. The company is still around but now is called Genuine Diesel out of Iowa. Been talking to them on the units. As for the motor its 9 to1 comp, forged pistons, forged GM rods 3/8, cast crank two bolt. I did install ARP rod bolts and main bolts studded. I never really intended to put them on this motor so will have to keep that in mind lol. As for the heads GM cast open chamber, I will keep the boost around 8 psig. Did spec out a cam today Comp CL11-411-8 528 in 549 ex 114 over lap hydraulic roller turbo cam 2100 to 6300 rpm mid rang performance. I also need to keep in mind the pump 12J Berkley as the shaft and the A pitch impeller is only rated for 500 horse but have seen them do well at 600. Will be pushing a few things but if it all goes well might put together a nice bottom end and good set heads next year :wink2:. thanks for the chat keep it coming.
