When taking the measurement (ex.94-96''), from the transom to the v-drive, do you measure to the front of the cases ? or the center of the cases ? Where do I stop ? Thanks.

Usually from the plate.
Thanks for the reply. If thats the location, I'm 94'' from transom to v-drive(@plate).

Any Hondo owners out there that can chime in w/ there set up measurements or advice w/ what your hull liked or disliked ?? Mine is a 1976, t-deck, 5/8th runner. Motor placement, prop size, prop location ??? Thanks for any help.

This sounds like a thread that only the set-up master RCL can answer. Send a PM to Rattle Can Lou. He'll get back to you after the Burley hangover is gone!

77Hondo Gt 5/8 runner. Motor 36" v-drive 98" prop location under the boat. The more motor you throw at it, the more it likes it.

96" is nice for a ski boat motor, 98" for more motor, since it is 5/8" runner. Be sure to "check out the bottom shape", before use. The faster you go, (with a steeper shaft angle) the more weight is transfered to the transom. When you see faster runnerbottoms with the plates and some of the rear hull in the water and the nose up, = too much shaft angle. This also depends on how much rocker the bottom has, and that's why I said 96" or 98". (stock 5/8" don't have much, if at all)

I had a 511T that was 94 and the motor was at 34. Worked fine even with blown gas. Mid 120's as I remember. Anyway....try it like it is first.

V-drive placement has everything to do with strut placement, the v-drive is aligned to the strut, not the other way around. It doesn't do much good to put the v-drive further foward (and higher) just for the sake of having it further forward. Strut placement and angle is what is more important. Basically you align the v-drive to the strut and place it where you still have clearance between the v-drive and the bilge, and enough shaft coming through the bottom to run your in-out, split coupler, safety collar, and shaft seal. Where ever that ends up that is where it is, don't get caught up in the idea that the things needs to fit a specific # measurment.

For informational purposes only, My oldman's 80 hondo has a 7/8" runner with the v-drive around 96". Motor was 34" and I believe he ran 11 1/16 x 16 Menkins (to many to remember). He ran, on average, in the mid 130s (personal best was 141 twice) with a 500CI chevrolet.

Thanks everyone for the replys, they have been helpful. I have ran the boat a few times, alot of cruising because of water quality, but have made a few passes. Its a blast to drive and it runs safe. Its not doing anything weird, its just not running as dry as it could. So, I was just making sure my setup was close...to the norm. It is, so now I think a prop change or some plate adjustment will get me there.

One quick question.....The ol' nickel trick, is that going to help carry the nose more ?? Thanks again guys.

Nickel in or nickel out???
Nickel or two in will not help carry the nose, but it might help get the ass end cleaned up. Be sure to check prop placement. You don't want the prop too far away from the strut. If it has a nickel and you take it out it will carry the nose more, but most likley drag the tail more.

x2!

On a recent build with nothing else to go on, that is what worked best. With propshaft installed and set in correct location, set v-drive in and made sure v-drive output and propshaft were aligned and coupler slid from one shaft to the other with ease, and fabbed v-drive mounts and mounted based on that.

I've been wrong before but this seemed to make the most common sense over all the other :)bulb great ideas, so we went with it.
