any tips on installing wainscoting? it seems pretty simple, but i haven't done it yet.

i have experience putting up crown moulding and baseboards with quarter rounds to finish it up. i have also done chair rails as well. given that, i do think it should be a fairly simple task.

is there something i am not aware of?

is there more to it than i think?

I would put a straight edge on the wall just to see whats going on before I attached it- what adhesive are you using ?what is it hardwood veneer?

Its pretty easy. I bought sheets of it at Home Depot. Put the baseboard and chair molding on it came out nice.

Are you putting a chair rail at the top? Base at the bottom? Is it stain grade, or paint grade? Is it a continuous run or broken at intervals with trim?
chair rail at the top, base at the bottom ... will be painted white as of right now

What did you have in mind, stained and finished wood, paint, or a wall paper finish, I've seen it all ways!

If your painting it, your saving most of the hassle. You don't have to worry about your nailing as much, since your going to fill the holes anyway. Your install will be much the same as putting base and trim on. The only exception is using an adhesive for the panels on the walls. I use liquid nail. When applying your adhesive, do it in complete circles(4-6" diameters). It will create a vacuum that will help adhere the panel to the wall. If you choose to go stain grade, go grab yourself a 64 box or larger of crayons. You'll find whatever color variant you'll need to fill the nail holes accurately. Crayons have the best and cheapest color selection you'll find. Not to mention the color range is massive.

so it would be better to use liquid nails?

yup, similar to those ... does it come in big panels or individual ones?

Just slats, and a liquid nails would be the way to go. It's not worth it to come to Vegas to get it, but I could help you pick it up close to home if you wanted.

Thats not going to be much of a contrast!
the top portion will be a different color that is unknown as of right now.

wouldn't it be easier to use the bigger sheets?

Liquid Nail or PSB construction adhesive is good. I've never had a failure with either for paneling. In most cases the adhesive will pull the paper off the rock before coming loose from the paneling.
i figured it might be easier to use brads into the studs.

Easier yes, absolutely.

Better looking, not in my opinion. You will usually get more definition in the grooves and bead using slats.
Don't listen to this guy...:p I used the paneling and it worked great, but I agree that the slats would probably give it a better finish. Heres a few pics..

In progress..

Complete...

Pics are from my cell phone, so they are not that great...
