I think most can agree that the glory days for America and the world for that matter is over and done. Whether you own your own business or work in the private or public sector tough times are ahead. Face it, America blew up economically, politically, culturally, and morally. The next shoe to drop is inflation which will eventually hit hard. When it does our buying power will drop but our earnings will stay the same or worst we will lose our jobs. Most of us, and many already are, will probably have to struggle along in our lives like walking in deep sucking mud. Making gains of any kind will be difficult.
It seems to be time to batten down the hatches. Which means no debt. I'm taking savings and paying my house off in Jan. 2012. I'm not giving a crooked corporation another cent in interest. Then within a year or two I want to also thin possessions a little. I want my family to be light of burden, live safely and simply, be free of stress, appreciate all that's good, and be content with life. I think this is a realistic plan. Can't hurt to try.

That's a good plan, I'm doing the opposite. I have paid down my first home, my wife's student loans and all the vehicles and toys are paid for. I am leveraging my current home to buy another. I will have substantial debt but I think it is the right move for my family at my age. If all goes well, I can work as long as I want then move on when I'm ready. If not, I will adjust and still be fine.

Zombie, that is a very good plan IMO.

I took these very steps last year in earnest. CC's are all zero or near zero balance.
Sold off 2 vehicles so far, one boat. Still have to sell the 5th wheel, it is the next item to go on the auction block.

My truck, and the one other vehicle financed (Vette) are getting double and triple payments thrown at them. They will be zero this year.
The house, I don't think I can reasonably pay it off in 2 years, but am making principle payments and tidying it up for sale.

If full blown anarchy ever happens, money and debt will be meaningless though.
It is the paring down of stuff that will be beneficial later, as well as the possesion of things that will be valuable. (ammo, for instance?)
Mobility will be a great asset. If it ever gets to where it looks hopeless, I'll meet you in Alaska! (I know a lot of defensible spots up there!):)devil:)devil

If your "retired", it makes sense to pay everything off. If not, keep the house (IRS interest writeoff) and use the savings for further investment / next egg.

Well if you would get ur azz to work and drill us some oil we could be king of the hill again.:)devil:)devil:)hand Somehow we have allowed our leadership to put us in the situation we are in. If we weren't exporting almost half a trillion bucks a year, buying product
that we already have, the sand monkeys wouldn't be raising near the ruckus they have been, and we could be using that money here.....And if gas was $5 a gal. it wouldn't bother me to pay it...if it was MADE IN USA.

And i am pretty sure when obama-gone things will get better.....in the meantime
i have my overhead cut to bear minimum...i have zero debt and i make the best
use of every day......even it's making the bottom of a boat as straight as i can,
knowing that when i flip it over nobody will ever notice....

And ya....it will be Redagain maybe even more red than before!!

I will continue the way I have. No debt other than my mortgage which I have not much to pay. I will save a little more than before. But the 31 thing I will do is to continue to fight to bring the gov back down to where it needs to be and help push to reduce our deficit. How you may ask. well I will back and vote for those that want the same. And if they don't do it vote them out the next chance. Z may think America is done for but I believe ther are plenty more glory days ahead for the U.S. My children and everybody elses deserve the same as we had and don't deserve to pay the price for liberal spending.

Yes, why worry about debt, if you are going to pay it off with worthless dollars, or their is no system to collect it. If cash becomes worthless you'll be buying stuff with gold, diamonds, or trading

Food, water and ammo storage! N/K
Yup a supply of food, gas, etc. I doubt you'll have the gas available to drive to AK.

Vote out all of the progressive liberal socialist leaning pols as possible and help make the USA back into the concept of the founding fathers. Nothing new really. And our economy will return with proper leadership and a close watch by the common sense portion of the public.

I don't share the doom and gloom of he OP.

I think, Americas best days are around the corner. We might get hit with inflation/Taxes. But whats happening now in this country (The 2010 elections.) People are fed up with the all the state and Fed BS. And are making a stand to get this country back on track.

You sir, are a wise man......

People are seeing rioting in the streets around the world and getting fed up with business as usual. The WI teachers are making fools of themselves because their state can't sustain their underfunded retirement fund and they won't sit down to discuss reasonable ways to make things work putting the duty to pay on the backs of governemnt and the taxpayers. Instead of reasoning, they are walking off the job, not only leaving the students they've been given the repsponsibility to teach, but trying to get those students to support them in the street.

People are fed up with self interest groups and all for me types. The unemployed business people in WI will have the last word at the polls.

Let's also not forget the fact that the scumbag teachers, who only care about themselves, are screwing the students parents who have to stay home to watch thier kids because school is closed. All the while those parents are loosing thier days wages so the scummy gov and unions can force those same taxpaying parents to give them a life above and beyond what they can provide for themselves. I say abolish unions. there are plenty of state and federal laws to keep employers from doing what they did to form unions. Colective bargaining my ass. It should be called collective extorsion.:|err

It seems like having a plan is a lot like predicting the future...and for way to long that future was under the guidance of a government who only saw it's citizens as a source of income and it's primary goal was it's own growth and prosperity.

I think obama has done us a favor. He has taken us farther in the wrong direction in 2 years than in the last 20. Every thing he does just makes the
direction more obvious.....and people are beginning to notice....lots of people.......and rather than just talk about it, they are beginning to do something about it. And they are doing it within the confines that our founding fathers gave us.

That is the American way and that is what sets us apart and above all others.
The last election was the beginning. We the People have had enough and the members of congress who heard us have jobs and the ones who don't will be unemployed in less than 2 years.

The way out..and up seems simple....

Obama seems to have complied a list of "things that don't work' faster than any other president in history so a 180* from that point is a good place to start..

EPA/tree huggers need to take an unpaid vacation till unemployment is @6%. Any employer who hires a fence jumper looses business license. Homeland security sole duty is to keep an eye on muzzies.

I nominate Tommy to be new "drill for oil everywhere" czar.:)devil
Build nuke plants everywhere...even in Afghanistan... we build/own/and run them...Muzzie extremist free countries get electricty at cost

The most powerful country on the planet buys it's power from people who only deal with us for money? How did that happen? Left turn politics?

I bet they have a laugh every time they hand the muzzie bad guys a big box of cash....

And yep...goods and services will get more expensive..it's all about 'deal with it'....
Worst case cenario...and every thing takes a big dump, debt becomes a non issue... i want firearms, tools and cheap transportation... i figure people with real world skills will have the advantage.

I do not like my conclusion. It is not just pessimism.

1. Look at all the many indicators of deep rot in our nation.
2. Name one other civilization that once it internally degraded ever bounced back to it's former glory ???

Sorry, Like other civilizations before, America is never going to recover the former glory we once had.
