What does the DNR mean by no automotive parts?:)bulb
Alternaters, Starters, have a marine rating and are spark proof so they don't blow up from the fumes in your bildge. Also carbs have breather vents turned down into the venturies for marine and also a marine fuel pump has a double diaphram. Also, the air cleaners are not flame arresters for automotive, they will burn................

I've had jet boats since 1980 and I used to hear that crap about marine parts. Thats all it is is to get your money. You'd think Obama thought it up. I've alway used car parts and I've never had a problem, and believe it or not, I've been stopped quite often. Of course my boats have always been completely open. I also think if they stop you and don't like your car parts, they will give you a warning. What year is your boat? If it's 30 years or older, you can get historical tags and then the cops can go piss up a rope. Happy boating everyone. Chet

Rule 1 on any boat with a completely closed engine compartment like a Sea Ray where the engines sit under the floor, You run your bildge fan for at least a minute before you fire it up. Also, the fuel pumps DO have a dual diaphram and won't pump fuel in your bildge if they fail, mandatory on a large cruiser. Same with the alternater and starter. I would NEVER use an automotive starter, alternater or fuel pump on a large cruiser with a totally enclosed engine. However on a Jet or drag boat, with a completely open engine compartment, I don't think the law applies. I got a coast guard safety sticker with no flame arrester, a GM car alternater and a hitatchi high torque car starter on my Sanger. :D

marine parts start out as car parts.... The dist cap uses brass terminals vs alumunium with a double screen located in the vent. The altenator uses a screen in the back of the delco with sealant between the cases. The starter has sealant between all case joints. Fuel pump has double diaphram w/leak tube placed in carb air horn or flame arrester. Carb has vents that turn down to the venturi and a flame arrester on top.If you are really worried about not having the marine parts, I think I still have some SAE J 1461 stickers in my tool box. That is the marine safety standard. Hope this helps!!!

That's the way to beat them at their own game. :D I had a realistic set of DOT stickers for my beanie helmets when I rode a motorcycle. I used to get hassled especially in Royal Oak. After the stickers no more crap.

Like mentioned above I believe the SAE Marine requirement is intended for closed engine compartments. However, keep in mind that fuel vapors are heavier than air and want to go down. In a car they "drop" out of the engine compartment and can dissipate. In a boat they "drop" and will collect in the bilge. Without Ignition protection KFB. (Ka-Fu^kin-Boom)

At any rate, since the federal and local governments are all operating in the red they are going to need to generate fees and fines so they will be looking for crap like this to write tickets on. If you choose to go without ignition protection, get the stickers on the parts and save the fees and fines. :D

Top mount starters are good, cars don't have them, Chrome or polished alternators are good cars don't come with them, MSD igintions are good too, car don't come with them either :) Fuel pumps and carbs are hard to get around.
