My first Mercruiser impeller service has had terrible results, hoping someone can point me in the right direction here..

...here's what happened.:
i carefully read and watched videos on the process: Seawater impeller change, Mercruiser alpha 1,
Drained oil, PUT GEAR SHIFT IN FORWARD, split off lower and swapped out impeller, put back together, (total pain by my self, had a hard time lining everything up)
then I went to run it (out drive fully submerged in tub) and she won't start. It Will crank, but won't light off and run... My first thought was it had to be un-related, then I really thought about it... Did I mess up the shifter adjustment or something ? I.E, is there is a neutral lock out so she wont start cause it's not quite in neutral? That would throw me off because I guess I would imagine some sort of neutral lock out to not even allow motor cranking? Then sure enough I fiddeled with the shifter and she won't positively engage into reverse. The gear shifter feels like its in neutral and can clunk into forward, but not reverse. What the hell is going on? Any help/ advise would be greatly appreciated

First check to see if the shifter is hooked up correctly? You must have a mr/alpha with a splined shift shaft? The gen two has a 90 degree shift arm that fits into the upper shift cam and is hard to screw up.
To check just put selector in neutral and spin prop both ways and it should spin freely, now put it into forward and it should lock to the left and ratchet to the right. Now put it into reverse and it should lock to the right and racket left? If this does not happen then you got the splines off by one or two splines.
Now even if the shift was off ,and as long as the motor cranks , it will not have any bearing on weather or not the engine starts. It may be harder to start because prop may be turning.

well i got it to light off and run in the driveway today, i think by just jiggling the whole shift actuator thing.. ? i looked closely at it and noticed at the rocker point between the forward cable and the reverse cable there's an electric tab to a switch, i traced the wire from that to the dist.. so maybe that was stuck switched? I'm guessing that is the switch i read about somewhere that stalls the motor for a half second to shift into gear? Either way, i still don't have a positive engagement to reverse. Forward seems ok and neutral feels like.. well.. neutral. i attempt a switch into reverse and she dies completely. I'm sure almost everyone on here can appreciate the frustration with this type of issue when trying to work on it alone, as i can't quite see whats doing what when im up front shifting.. lol:)bit any thoughts guys?, am i back to Hullshots thought about the shifter splines being off a spline or two between the upper and lower, (remember thats how this whole thing started, after an outdrive re-assembly)

usually where most go wrong is when they put the lower back on while in forward gear they spin the prop to line up the splines but get confussed and spin the prop the wrong way or rock it back and forth which will push it into neutral or slightly out of full forward then they get lucky and the drive shaft lines up and the lower is on? Now here is the problem you have..

Shift into Forward and drop the LU again.

Grab the shifter 'Foot' and turn it clockwise, does the shifter foot point straight forward?

If not, re-index it on the splined shaft, now turn the prop COUNTERCLOCKWISE, it should be locked.

If you turn the prop clockwise, at all, the shifter foot will turn away from straight forward, put it back Forward and reinstall the LU< taking great care to NOT turn the prop CW.

Once the bolts are in move the control to Neutral and spin the prop, it should turn freely bother directions.

Try Reverse, it should lock CW and ratchet CCW.

Check and add oil.

Done.
