Im Using An Msd Distributor, But Im Not Running A Box. It Is The Msd Ready To Run With The External Blaster Coil. Should I Run The Resister With This Set Up, Or Just By Pass It All Together? Ive Been Told To Run It Both Ways. Just Currious Witch One Is The Best Way To Hook It Up.

MSD says NO ballast resistor.

The only purpose of it is to reduce arcing when the points open and close, extending their life. No points, no resistor.

My R2R setup is quite happy going on 4th year now.

Donny it will depend on your coil. If you run a blaster coil or something like that, you won't need one. The resistor help make the coils live, and not over heat.

Sorry for the thread jack, but I've noticed some Mallory stuff requires the ballast resistor on their electronic setups. Some of their coils even have the resistor built in. What, if any, is the reason for this?

To answer your question, no resistor is needed with an MSD setup. Those blaster coils run on 460-480 volts when hooked up to the box. Having said that, with 460-480 volts on the primary, it will obviously pull a lot more current than it does with just 12 volts on the primary. In other words, with just 12 volts on the primary it can more than handle the current draw without the resistor.

The Reason I Asked Is She Was Giving Me Fits. One Second It Would Start, The Next It Was Dead. I Took Out The Resister And Now She Is Happy Again. Hit The Key And Bingo. When I Had It Hooked Up It Was Tring To Kill The Batt Because It Wouldnt Start. The Motor Sounds Happier Now Without The Resister. As My Cousin Vinny Would Say (i Gess The Fu-ken Thing Is Broken) One Of My Favoret Movies.

Donny I have a Blaster out of my boat has a half season on it. I'm switch to the HVC II for this season.

Double and tripple check GROUNDS, as well as power connections. Mine has been flawless.

Hook up a timing light to a plug and let it flash to confirm spark when cranking, especially to confirm or refute the possible "erratic spark" you appear to have.

I would disconnect ALL wires, and ohm-check them as well, one at a time. Every one should be NEAR zero.

Also confirm good power thru the switch, negligible voltage drop across it. The contacts inside DO get bad, eventually, and problems arise.
