Things don't add up. Engine has a front sump pan on it. Oil filter is 1/8th from sitting on stringer. Starting to wonder if it came with a 460 in it. Or did one of the other owners put this motor into this boat. If it came with a 460 where is the correct oil pan? And did it come stock with a remote filter setup?
Anyone out there know more about the 79 Tahiti 21 foot limited and what engine was in them?

My old '77 Sanger Super Jet came from Sanger with a Ford 460 with a stock front sump oil pan. You will need to get a 10qt pan and run the oil pick-up to the rear.

Daryl what you described is "status quo" for a "production install" in the 70's you can use a shorter Ford filter (#43 ,I belive) , often theres enough room to "snake" the full size ph8a filter in and out and no it did not neccesarily come with a remote unit , Try putting a freezer baggy around it when removing and reinstalling , re the Oil pan , the front sump was the norm and honestly with moderate power and conservative use that 460 will give years of service as built. Popular Engines used in production were Hardin , Harmin, Guardian, Panther amoung others Tom

It might be an optical illusion but it doesn't look like there would be enough clearance between a rear sump pan and the pump intake on your boat. Should you decide to change pans, you may have to raise the engine up which could possibly cause other issues with engine to pump alignment.

Yeah Tom the shorty is a fram # ph 43 and cuts about 1 1/2 inches of the filter for ease of replacement And then there is a ph16 which is smaller diameter and even shorter with the same thread count and gasket surface area. Just do it more often, OR do the remote? M

Cas is probably right as well as Tom. I didn't have an problems with the stock front mount until I built HP. Ran it for quite a few years stock. Look like you have a 3 point mount which could make it tough to add a standard 10qt pan.
IMO, switch to a WIX filter.

It looks just like yours. Maybe different seating arrangement.
