    Default Capsule Legal Boats

I'm posting this question because I was curious. How many APBA legal capsule boats are out there that are ready to run (or are in the build process) in the 2016 season in PS, SS and K classes? Any word on the fate of the open boats in those classes yet? I'm frustrated with the rumors and back and forth(appeals about the capsule mandate) and need some insight for our future.

Any numbers on boats and information would be appreciated.

On the West Coast, I think I've only seen one capsuled PS boat at a race (and it crashed at LB in '12, haven't seen it since) and not one capsuled SS boat. There are three capsuled K boats - K24, K69 and K999 actively racing. K711 crashed at LB this year and won't be back, but I hear there is another capsuled K being put together to run next season. I don't think anyone knows yet if APBA is going to stand firm on the capsule mandate or not - I know the racers are against it.

Thanks for the reply Rayzor. I know of these boats you mentioned and of one SS boat in Washington. I didn't know that Easons K-711 was finished.

I raced GPS 95 last year and tried to make the field at Burley but was a bit off of the pace. I'm asking this question because I like my open boat but want to run in the faster PS class. I am looking for a capsule boat that I could race and be completely legal but I'm not ready to drop the coin unless I'm mandated to. I don't want to get all set up and then find out that there are not enough boats to even make a field.

The K-999 boat runs here out of Boise. It and the K-24 are crossing the ocean as we speak for races in Australia. That doesn't leave many boats here in the states to race. Maybe we can still get hooked up with Lucas Oil and make some classes at their large Drag Race events.

Mark Lopresti of Dragboats Unlimited has an ex-Rankin capsule for sale in Parker, pretty boat too, think he is keen to move it so he can step up to a 6 Liter capsule.
BTW, we have 5 boats running in that class now and a couple more on the way, guess we have the biggest capsule class, and lots of boats and new hulls for sale.....ER...wanna go fast and be safe? Just saying....

I Like the 6 litre class but it's out of my budget. I agree that it is the safest boat out there today!! I was putting the feelers out there to see what open boats were going to be left to race in the old SS, PS and "K" classes. If the open boats can't race because of the capsule mandate there will be not enough boats to make the boat count. Races like Burley that rely heavily on open flats to make those classes are going to have a poor showing. I for one want more capsules out there. I just don't want to be the only guy out there in the PS class with a capsule boat. We need more capsules out there. If the mandate hold there will be quite a bunch of open boats that will race the nostalgia and GPS 95 class.

    Thanks for input

Sure Paul, I understand the concerns, the boat counts will be down for a while no doubt whatever the APBA decide as we seem to be in a downturn period, partly because of the economy, part because of capsule rules that are not popular with the older generation, and also part because people, drivers and families are tired of going to races where people get hurt. But the challenge is to keep the racing exciting whichever way things go....I noticed in Australia when a class is short of boats they simply run classes together, either by handicap or not. This keeps the fun for drivers and spectators alike alive and creates kinda different races that you might not expect, sometimes really GREAT races.
I don't suggest putting say Hydro's against PS, but certainly SS/PS/GPS95 would be fine or whatever the general feeling of the day is to keep the racing safe for all.
Just a bit of open mindedness is whats going to keep it fun and attract NEW people to the sport here....

OH, a brand new 6 Liter hull is 27K....how much is it to put a flatty capsule together from scratch

Come on Pat, you told me you wouldn't be back on the water next year. This thread is about capsule boats ready for the water. But shit, more power to you if you've changed your mind and will be back in the Spring!

To build a new capsuled K from scratch is going to cost $80k-$100k - depending on how extravagant you want to get with hardware, paint and safety equipment. A new motor alone is going to set you back at least $40k for a solid, competitive piece. I'll bet Mike Stock has well over $200k into El Cid.........

The funny thing is, for half the cost of a K, you could build one of these that would beat anything on the course (well, maybe not Ty in the SS80)........but nobody likes outboards here on the West Coast. Greg Banks beats all the inboard boats in Australia in his Unlimited Outboard.........
