    Default Mandella Rebuild

Back in 1969 my father had a Mandella Shortdeck built by Eddies Inboard Marine here in Tucson, Az . It was rigged with a Hollman Moody 427 sideoiler . It also had what they refered to as butterfly plates for the cav. BUt in 1976 he had to sell it. Well about 3 months ago I got a call from Eddie Jr. Telling me they had found my dad's boat . Turns out that the person my dad sold it to still had it and it had been in the back of his garage for the last 30yrs . Needles to say I jumped on it as I had sold my Mandella a couple of years ago and have regretted it every day since. Turns out the Sideoiler had been replace by a 468 Chevy . So now starts the process of totaly restoring to original.

Well I have been searching high and low for all the original Hollman Moody marine gear .Oilpan , oil cooler , timing chain , etc. Nothing . Absolutely nothing . And then all the sudden this popped up .

Needless to say I jumped on it . Sent the seller a deposite and will be heading to Reno next weekend to pick it up.

Now we are ready to get going to completely restore her to original .

Nice. Looking forward to watching the build. I recently picked up a 1969 long deck, but I'm not close to starting the build yet.

Yeah pretty ugly huh . It's an Edelbrock TR2 with a single carb top on it . I have the top to take it back to dual quads .

Yeah he is . They are old family friends . His dad and my dad went to High School together . So you must have been at the wedding up at Apache .

Actually not much at this time. End of year is extremely work consuming . And now that it is over we are now having a pool and spa put in . That project will be done by the end of Feb. Then the wife will be happy and the BOAT CAN BEGIN . I have been stripping down little things like wiring , water and fuel lines . Driveline comes out next .Then the Chevy comes out and we will do all the new rigging for the FE . Mainly Engine Plates . That way we can send them off to be anodized with everything else that will be re-anodized . Then all fun sanding begins . Going to re gel it in the exact colors and scheme . Floor is in excellent shape but will be re flowcoated . As for the engine it's on a stand at Eddie's Inboard . Need to tear it down and see what needs to be done . The Edelbrock heads go bye bye . Most likely going to be a set of Blue Thunder heads going on and bump the compresion to 13-1 . I will be posting more pics soon .

You mentioned you were going to gel coat the hull. When I had the other Mandella done at B&KBoat Repair in Bellflower, CA (closed now) several years ago, Ken stronglyrecommended paint because gel coat has a tendency to crack. Your thoughts?
