Sucks for the racers that invested the money to run for high points champion and Lucas even cancels the awards banquet.

However, there are still 6 California Dragboat races every year with NJBA at Lake Ming.

My bet is that Tommy or a group led by Tommy will step up.

On the brighter side, SDBA has a number of races in the central and southern states also. Some of the LUCAS OIL races were the result of what used to be SDBA races previously but taken over by IHBA.

NJBA has operated pretty independent of LUCAS OIL, or it appears that way from a distance, and maintained its own character. I think that is good for dragboat racing and most competitors that run it. You guys have remained true to what the sport is about, or at least better than some other organizations. I'm in Texas and it appears that way to me anyway.

Saw an interview with Forrestt Lucas about a year ago. When he was talking about the Wheatland facility he said his only regret was building the drag boat lake. Said he wished he'd put an asphalt track there instead. Figured Lucas wasn't long for drag boat racing at the time. All that said, they did pour a ton of $$ into the sport and gave it a good go. Sorry it did't work out.

A national series is not necessary to race boats. Things change. Roll with it.

Hopefully it gets back to more regional events. Its MUCH easier for people to get into the sport and race when they dont have to tow across multiple states for each race. Think of years ago when there was Irvine, Puddingstone, Castaic, Bakersfield, Firebird, Chowchilla etc. Yes, I know some of those venues arent possible now. If you live in the southwest that's possible for a couple or family to drive to with a race boat and compete without taking half a week off to get to the event and the other half to get back. Something similar to the IHBA circuit of 30 years ago. Going pro today means hauling your rig and crew all over the southern US. With Licas gone the regional associations will start to pick up the slack.

Truth is, its probably always been a regional sport
