I thought I'd post this in case anyone was interested in going and lives around the area. So, on Vashon Island which is an island in between Seattle and Tacoma in Puget Sound every 4th of July at 530am they do an annual unofficial small hydro race around the island. Not sure if you win anything other than your name on the trophy. Anyway, some years maybe only two boats race but generally there is a handful. Many years ago we used to party all night on the 3rd, stay up all night to watch the hydros and then go home and crash before the night firework festivities. So many great memories of drinking hot coffee (or hot toddies?) and bundling up to cheer people on. This used to be an official race until the 70's but the coast guard and King County called it off because of noise. But the unofficial race still goes on each year and we say "suck it" to all the residents who get annoyed by the 1 morning of noise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, I will be down in Vegas this year for the 4th and cannot attend but if anyone is interested in attending or racing let me know and I can hook you up with the group who does it or give you directions (either by boat or car via ferry).
If coming by boat the starting point is Jensen Point in Burton but they do go all the way around the island. Make sure to stop by the beach before or after and say hi to Kitt and Tom for me. Kitt has won the last couple years.
Here are some photos of it from 2 years ago.
