Mouzer it's because it's Salem, the arm pit of Oregon. Not much down there to do and rivers blow. Come up north to where the big boys play and you'll see where all the excitement and moneys at from the small jets to the million dollar offshore race boats line the sandbars.

Armpit???? This is Salem not Medford! We spend a fair share of time in Portland, but with the implementation of the no wake crap in the Ross island channel and lagoon we spend less. I've never been on the Columbia as we don't know where to launch but it looks like there's a pretty good crowd at government island? But in the grand scheme of things our little spot outside of Salem is cool. No crowds, no law problems, water is nearly always as smooth as it shows in the pics, water averages over 10' deep (yes you gotta be comfortable with cruising over a shallow gravel bar that's under 4' deep but I do it daily in my vdrive wake boat without issue) And best of all I can be in the water in 20 mins from the house. I recorded 65 trips this last summer which ranks way up there for an oregon boater. Call it what you want it's our little spot, and we leave the bbq, chairs, firewood, etc on the beach all summer.

But please continue to think it sucks. Keeps down on the rifraf!

Methford, Salem...they're all the same lol. The only thing good about Salem is the State Fair and elephant ears....hahaha. I will admit the spot where you can leave all your stuff is cool. Private spots would be my cup of tea. Only prob is that spot isn't accomodating our crew of 35+boats/ 100+people for our weekely turnout. The being closer to home thing on the Columbia is money with less than 10 minutes from the house to the ramp. Allows me to be out every night after work from May-Oct. Rough life I know. We got guys coming 3 hours down from up North in Washington and guys down south of us coming up now regulary. Bring your crew. More the merrier! James Gleason ramp or Chinook Landing are the 2 places you'd wanna launch from.

How is the water on the Columbia? Smooth enough to run the hydro? What about law enforcement? They hassle about noise?

I'm in Salem, but try to stay off the Willamette, As I don't know the channel. We usually head up to Detroit or LBC. I do, however, think it would be awesome to put together some sort of poker run at Detroit over one of the Holidays.

so how many miles of river are safely runnable in the salem area in the summer time? I have a eagle tunnel hull that I spent the last 2 years building and would like to come up and run the river when the weather warms up.

Not many. Where are you from? I've got probably 2000 hours logged on the river from Wilsonville to Albany and can honestly say that if you don't go with someone or follow someone who REALLY knows the river you're asking for trouble. There's been a few new ramps open up around the area that have made some safe(r) spots available but it's still a bit sketchy. Hit me up when you're ready and I'll show you where you can and can't go from the local ramps.

How big is your boat? I do not go to Detroit. Place is a DUMP, and the water sucks for all aspects of boating except sitting. LBC is cool, we've moored there with the wake board boat a few times but haven't since the channel has changed and I can get it up river and away from the retards.

Does N20fast4u* = John Green? Our boat is 27+ Which is big enough to get us over the ruff water at Detroit so we can sit and drink. LOL. But other than that you're right. But it would still be fun to put together some sort of event.
