    Default Tonto Basin to AJ

What a ride that was. Left Big Daddy's subs and pizza at 1:20. Thought what the heck lets go home through Globe/Miami. Na, lets take the trail back to AJ and stop off at the rv. That's one hell of a drive. 44 miles of switch backs. Most of it is dirt, and in bad shape. I had the ass end of that chev going past the front end a few times. I almost put it over the side, just before the the Marina at Apache lake. I was feeling good, half way there, NOT. Chit another 16 miles to Canyon Lake, damb! Fishcreek hill was nasty, full or rutts and rocks. Once you get past that it's smooth sailing on pavement, with some nasty turns. Well I left the basin at 1:20 and was turning right onto Main Street at 2:13. I think I made some good time on a road that might have been posted 25 mph, to much dust I couldn't see the sign.

First experience on Fish Creek Rd.? Should have travelled it 40 yrs ago. I'd be carefull trying to haul ass there. Many a person has gone over the edge being careless.

I was on it 22 years ago. There was no railing back then, but this was the first time to do the entire trail. Drifting a 4 door 2500 around switch backs is fun. I wish I had a subaru wrx, that would have been a blast.

I took that rout with the Liberator this past August. There is a Motorcycle & a car down at the bottom of Fish Creek Hill. They never fixed the guardrail in that spot.

Its a cool drive But I wouldn't haul arse on it. Seen to many close calls. Did you stop at Tortilla Flats for a bottle of Rattlesnake beer. The Green chili burger there is Awesome too.

No I didn't stop. The last time I stopped there I had a speeding ticket in my back pocket. The railing was mess up in a couple of spots, one piece was pealed back like a tin can. The road going up was bad, hard to get any traction. I was glad when it was over. It is beautiful when you get down in the canyon.

Yes it is. One of the best things about apache lake is its hard for Ships to get there. But some do make it. The sad deal is that more wake boaters are going there now. Messing up the water. But its still the best lake in AZ.

I mean that lake sucks stay away. Cops are mean. People there suck too.lol

lol, I saw the pic's from this past summer. After the fish kill and the lake being drained most of the bass fishing crowd stays away. Roosevelt looked good, smooth as glass.

I know what you mean. I go down that road 10 times a year at least. With a 250SD,a 4,000lb cabover camper and the boat. Apache is the best lake in the state for the 25' and under crowd. I have been going there my whole life(42yrs) with my father and his v-drive. I was 11yrs old when I finaly got my first 100+mph ride. 107 to be exact. Damned mom was pissed.

    Something is not right.

Yea not right between my ears. I was haulin the mail. There are spots that you can get up to 60 mph. 35+ around most of the corners. At least the ones that I could see around.

I would like to go to the lake and stay at the hotel for a few days. I know I'll be alone, my wife can't stand my driving.

Dang... thats a little fast, be careful. Like AzMandella I haul a 11.5ft Lance camper and a 5000 pound boat up and down that hill at least 6 times a summer. Theres no room for mistakes on the dirt, you would be surprised how far your truck will slide if you lock up the brakes.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have 9.5' Lance but it has the fiberglass siding and every option available at the time. It weighs about 4500 fully loaded and my boat is around 4500/w trailer and another 70 gal of fuel. 20 in the tanks and 50 in jugs. I never exceed 25mph on that road. Once I had to lock it up going down hill because some ass hole was flying around the corner and slid at least 30 ft. Was able to let off just in time to make the turn. Took my wife an hour to recover,
