    Default Lake Mead Really Low

Went out Mon the 5th. I launched where Lake Mead Marina used to be. At this rate the cove where the ramp is won't be usable for much longer. For past couple of years they are giving Powell priority. The powers to be don't seem to care about Mead at all. We are launching on gravel and people are getting stuck. Its a mess!

X2 I cancelled my trip to Mead because I heard of the water levels and the launch ramps. I was going to go in the middle of July but didnt want to worry the hassle of the trouble launching and especially since I had never been there before.

I live very close to Mead. But I think I am going to try Cottonwood on Mojave. The water level is normal there.

According to above, Powell has been going up since April. While Mead goes down. I agree there is plenty of water in Mead to boat on. My problem launching on weekends. Calville is just about out of the question on weekends. Las Vegas wash ramp, dry, govt wash same. If this keeps up the only place will be Hemming Way. That is without a long tow. Might as well go to Cottonwood.

If I remember correctly Mead is the one that is to fluctuate levels. Mohave is to be kept more constant.

So....what I am saying is it is doing the job it is intended to do

Powell is filling becuase they are holding water back from Mead. They are maintaining Mead at the current level, just about the Federal "drought" level, where the Feds step in. Inflow and outflow are managed to give the correct amount of water downstream. Powell and Mead are reservoirs, where Mohave, Havasu and the others downstream have to have a managed level.

The largest reason for Mead's level is the SNWA water intake #3 project: http://www.snwa.com/html/system_cip_intake.html

So what is the deal with Quagga at Mead now? If a boat comes out of there, is it going to be quarantined?

Not locally, but I was inline at the inspection station near Barstow. It was at night and they had the flash lights out really going over a guys boat checking for mussels. From what I can see out there, the mussells collect on verticle surfaces that get shade. Also boats in slips not on a hoist.

I heard another school of thought is that the threat of any possible act of terrorism on the dam until the bypass bridge is completed would be less productive if the lake was down until all traffic was diverted off of the dam.
