The family was anchored back in a small and narrow cove on Mohave and were all floating and having fun in the water. We watched as a boat entered the cove and slowly started heading our way, not a problem and we didn't even think twice of it. When they got within 20 yards they shut of their motor and one of them stood up and shouted "We are here to rob you!" All of a sudden my mind went into high gear... I'm with my family and at least 20 feet from the boat? I get to the boat, then what am I suppose to do? After 10 seconds they yell "Just kidding" fired up and pulled away.

Since then I have thought about this often. As of 2010, firearms are allowed in all National Parks, but this isn't a National Park it is the Lake Mead National Recreation Area and from my understanding firearms are still illegal in National Recreation Areas. This is the first time in my 30 years of boating I have ever even thought about this situation. Anyone ever had a problem?

I was just got back from staying a week at Mohave and I had my 9mm with me. I attached a holster via velcro to the bottom side of the dash of my boat. At the end of the day I would remove it and put it in my truck. We had zero issues at Mojave. We didn't see any shady characters around. Our camp was visisted by strangers a few times at night while we were at the Hotels, but nothing was stolen this time. Last year was an entirely different story though.

Its better to have and not need, then to need and not have! On long roadtrips, I carry my 9mm, but have never in the boat yet (if i take a trip in the ocean, I most likely would though). 9 times out of 10 u probably wouldnt need it, but I would hate to not have it that one time!

Always always always have mine within reach. Sounds crazy, but i keep mine in my ice chest. I've test fired my xd9 and xd45 straight out of a overnight ice bath. Submerged in ice water, ammo, gun, both ice cold and drenched. Fired perfectly.
Also keep a rather scary folding knife on me. Cold Steel Vaquero Grande.

Yep, better to have something on hand and never need it than to wish you had come prepared. Sad to say that there is always gonna be some one or group that thinks what you have should be theirs.

I always have a little something along for ATV rides, boat, longer vehicle travels...I prefer a 1911 in 45 ACP but carry a S&W Model 637 after dark when out walking.

gotta love Az, I can carry mine just about anywhere. Except banks and bars. On road trips I always have my sw99. At the lake I have a 5 round 357 ruger revolver. Dull stainless so no rust or water damage of any kind if it gets wet. In my 34 years of going to the lake, my dad has pulled his once and I've pulled mine once.

With my 1911's locked and loaded with a spare 8 round mag. My Compact 1911 locked and loaded with a 6 round mag and spare 8 round mag. S&W 637 5 in the and 6 more round on a rubber speed strip.

I also hedge the bet a little with the 637 as I have added Crimson Trace Laser Grips.

Just something about 230 grains of Hydro Shock rounds to really dampen ones day. I think more people boating on Falcon Lake should be reading this thread and toss a few AR's or AK's for the day. That and a few Spotters on the high ground with some .308,.300 WM or .50 BMG's for fun
