    Default ratchet

2nd illustration is a little overly simplified and only showing one direction, first does a lil' better

It works the same as a wratchet you use to work with. It will grab and apply one way (the way the engine spins) but will wratchet the other way...... When your engine slings a rod and locks up at 90mph, the wratchet will allow the impeller to spin, and let water through the pump. Making it a little less like you threw an anchor out running 90.

    Default Sorry

Thought it was referring to any and all ratcheting devices including hand tools....
Wasn't intended to be comedy or smart assed.
    Glad things got straightened out.
