More than likely its a performance jet boat which i believe could have been built by Earl Smith or Bill Scotten...What year and whats the prefix on the hull id#? No wait...what year model because i believe they both used pjb..18' or 19'

its an 81...prefix is PJB on the pink slip. I think its a CP but people are telling me different things. I think Scotten bought the molds from Earl in the early 80's. There is no hull number on the back so I was told if there wasn't one it was a Texas. But the year makes me think its a CP. No matter what it is I am happy with it, just was wondering what other people heard. thanks again

Gonna stir the pot now. PJB. Performance Jet Boats. Built in El Paso Tx. hence the name Performer 18 or as some called them Texas Performers. These are straight sided boats with the signature Earle Smith trademark Texas Longhorn raised portion in the front deck. Scotten didnt buy the molds from Earle. He bought boats from Earle until at some point he found a way to make more profit by getting someone else to build them for him and thats when the splash of the molds happened. Dont really know at what point Earle Quit building Performers but i do now Earle never imprinted a serial # in the gel. Since Earle sold out to EER in around 84 or 85 and at that point all he was building was texas tunnels I would think that an 81 would probably be a California Performance. Still a mystery to me as to why they both have the pjb prefix.

My boat is a 1981 Cali Performance. Hull ID is on the back corner.

Ahhh the gullwing history......LOL Lots of different stories.... GS told me himself that he and Bill drove to texas to pick up the molds way back when. The CP 18's and 18 tunnels still have the texas longhorns by the way.... Even the new tunnel mold.. I know for a while in the beginning Bill was using the PJB pefix before he got his own (PJT), but who knows when that switched. If you have any questions at all about what you have I would highly recommend you give Bill a call with a description of your boat and the hull ID. Bill keeps very good records and can most likely tell you what it is, who he sold it to, where it changed hands, etc. etc.

Tint is correct, it is an Earl Smith if the ser. number prefix is pjb. Tint and I both owned one before.

Interesting. Mine is a 1980 and has a pre-fix of JBX. I always thought it was an earl smith, but it has the HID number imprinted on the right rear transom glass. The registration says it's manufactured by Youngblood. I've only got the 1" stringers as opposed to the 2" that you see in most of the CPs. Now I'm wondering who built my boat.

According to the Youngblood boats page "Jimmy Johnson and Earl Smith were some of the first to receive molds from Youngblood and began building TX-19's. Jimmy has constructed a number of hull types under the name Jet Boat Engineering and Firehawk Performance Boats. Located in Vian, OK these hull have the JBX S/N prefix."

According to the US coast guard HID page it's a Firehawk. Interesting. Guess that's it then.

    MIC Company Address City State

JBX FIREHAWK PERFORMANCE BOATS HCR 68, BOX 960 VIAN OK

    Dan,
Mine is also a JBX but was built in 1978 and was under the Jet Boat Eng. brand! Jimmy Jhonson seems to have built a bunch of boats! Another tell tell sign is the deck has a rise in the center that tapers to both sides! I call it my water shed but the crew calls them Pregnant Bumps!

    Default Aluminum Tag

Doesn't the aluminum tag have something to do with who built it?
