the only way to get the flywheel/flexplate off is to remove the driveline. In order to remove the driveline, you will need to at least move the engine forward or the pump back. It's usually less work to move the engine than it is to move the pump.

If you can at least get the motor loose and hanging from a engine puller and just slide it forward enough to come off the pump shaft you can leave it in the boat and for the most part hooked up.

Do you have a rail kit or a 3 point mount setup?

I can get my driveline out with out moving the motor. Its a bitch tho. Got to take apart the u-joints. Give it a shot.

If not, put some chains on the motor and undo the motor mounts and bring it forward a few inches with out undoing everything else.

 

Some drivelines can be removed from the boat without moving the motor or the pump. Hang the back of the motor on a cherry picker, yank driveline, pull the rear mount/bell housing and the flywheel is accessable.

 

Going to p/u the boat next week and bring it home. Hopefully my buddies cherry picker is tall enough. Thanks for the help

 

just yank the motor. Unless your drive line disconnects easily then it seams like you would waste more time tyring to avoid pulling the motor then actually pulling it.

I yanked mine two weeks ago to replace the flex plate. I started around 9AM and was done by 4PM. I did all the work my self, made several trips to the parts store all around town and had a long easy lunch and took lots of brakes. Its not rocket science and it brought the engine high enough to make the work on it real easy..


Something else to think about. If your missing teeth on your Flywheel/flexplate, then what condition is your starter in? Dont want to waste all that effort on a flywheel to leave a jacked up starter.

any advice would help I got a sb 350 to a panther jet drive
im good with the motor lil confuzed on how it breaks free

Prob now is my flexpate is toe up.I wonderd why its sounded bad every now and again when I started it it sounded like hell.some one sugested putting a fly weel on in stead..?thinker stronger mabe my starter wont eat my flexplate.note I tryed shims before but every now and again it sound like he'll please help.new flyweel or flexplate.going to the lake next Thursday.great timing.

Citykid, you should start your own thread on flywheel vs flexplate. At any rate, if you change from one to the other you will need a new PTO (the part that the driveshaft bolts too) as they are different, the flexplate version is thicker than the flywheel version. If you shimmed the starter and couldn't get it right it's possible the bushing in the nose of the starter is worn, I think I'd replace both pieces, starter and flexplate. And do yourself a favor, buy an original GM flexplate, or get an SFI approved one, those aftermarket replacement ones like pioneer sells work well in a car, but without a converter bolted to them for stability I think they flex too much.

 

Thanks for the advise.before the prob started I used shims and then bought a new starter it was good for a wile with the new starter then just took a crap pulled the flexplate it was toe up.missing half of some of the teeth in different places figured a flyweelin wont flex and strip my teeth.
